Take a look back at the Cardinals' trade for speedster Lonnie Smith 41 years ago today. The Cardinals sent 40% of their starting rotation to Philadelphia in the three-team trade:

Nine years ago today, the Cardinals traded a hometown hero and the architect of the greatest postseason moment in franchise history when they sent David Freese and Fernando Salas to the Angels for Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk:

On this date in 1991, the Cardinals traded pitcher Ken Hill to the Montreal Expos for first baseman Andres Galarraga. Galarraga played one season in St. Louis before becoming a perennial MVP candidate with the Colorado Rockies.

I try to expunge this memory but then some unfortunate soul reminds me.

Didn't he suffer from an injury that year?

After he was named Rookie of the Year in 1974, Bake McBride credited Lou Brock with helping to guide him through his first season and expressed disappointment that Brock wasn't named MVP. "Every game he would tell me something different about how to play," McBride said. "He used to talk to me as he walked out to the outfield, and he talked to me every day about stealing bases.”

Weeks before the Cardinals opened the 1985 season, Whitey Herzog predicted that Vince Coleman might one day win the Rookie of the Year Award. He just didn't expect it would be that season.

I believe he had a broken wrist. Tough year for him in St. Louis and as a Cardinals fan was quite the disappointment; I remember 11 year old me being excited when we got him.

Even though Lou was the greatest and Henderson set the record; Coleman is the first player that enters my mind when I think about players having speed and stealing bases.

Twelve years ago today, Ryan Theriot angered his former Cubs teammates after the Dodgers traded him to the Cardinals. See what Theriot said and why Cubs catcher Koyie Hill demanded an apology:
