When Pop Haines was called up to the Cardinals, one of his former managers bet a suit that Haines wouldn't last 6 weeks in the majors. Haines went on to win 210 games and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1970:

Two years ago today, the Cardinals acquired Nolan Arenado from the Rockies. See why Arenado's contract details may have been the most difficult part of the deal and what Arenado remembered from his first trip to St. Louis:

Cardinals second baseman George Toporcer was widely credited as the first major-league infielder to wear glasses during a game, earning him the nickname, "Specs." See the story below to learn more about his career, which included stints backing up two Hall of Fame second basemen: Rogers Hornsby and then Frankie Frisch.

Anyone else remember Jose DeLeon? On this date in 1988, the Cardinals traded Ricky Horton, Lance Johnson, and cash to the White Sox for the promising righthander. See how the trade worked out for both sides:

Got to be a damn fine pitcher to lose that many games.

On this date in 1982, the Cardinals and Padres finalized the trade that sent Garry Templeton to San Diego and Ozzie Smith to St. Louis. See why both clubs were eager to swap star shortstops and why the trade took months to complete:

When I was a kid, I remember I hated the days Jose DeLeon pitched. As an 8-year-old, I was convinced that we lost every time he pitched (I probably wasn't that far off some years), and when the announcers would talk about how talented he was I would scream back at the TV that he stunk. Good times!

On this date in 1996, the Cardinals traded minor-league reliever Steve Montgomery to the Athletics for Dennis Eckersley. Here's a look back at Eckersley's two seasons in St. Louis:
