Caught the tail end of the 2011 World series last night. It was in the ninth and Craig was batting.

Interesting things I thought of. In the 10th, I don't know why they didn't walk Berkman in hindsight I guess. It would have loaded the bases, yeah, but a righty against Craig would have been better.

Also, strike one to Freeze (3-0 count) wasn't close to a strike. Texas would have been better off if he just walked.

A fun half hour or so of old baseball.

They also revised the rule about position players pitching.
...position players will only be allowed to pitch in extra innings, or in the ninth inning for a leading team that is up by ten or more runs or anytime for a trailing team that is down by eight or more.

I don't understand the need for this.

Whoa. I thought they were planning to get rid of it.
I actually don't mind this for a few reasons.

1. 13+ inning games are unique and neat in their own right. But, as a spectator at games, I've found myself more often than not, especially in regular season games/minor league games, wanting a conclusion sooner than later when it comes to extra innings. 5 hours at a ballpark is a long time. Ditto watching from home.

2. Those prolonged extra inning games typically have little action. Sans Game 6 of the 2011 WS, how many 11+ inning games can you think of where there was much back and forth?

3. It taxes pitching staffs. With the rigidity of how pitchers are used, which is a different topic entirely, the increased workload has repercussions.

4. Starting with a runner on 2nd gives the home team a bit more of an advantage in that they can set their strategy with a known goal in mind. Kind of like going second in college football OT. And, it's just more fun to watch. Emphasizes balls in play for the offense. Forces defenses to make plays.

Anecdotally, I once watched a minor league game where they were testing this concept out, must have been 4-5 years ago. The away team threw a combined no hitter over 9.2 innings but gave up a run in the 10th via a, iirc, groundout to the right side, walk, sac fly. Game over.
