The plate discipline needs a little work, but he's clearly holding his own there. It's worth noting that Baseball America had their "best tools" list last week where coaches voted on the best by players in their league, and Gorman was voted the best defensive 3B in the Midwest League. (Dylan Carlson was voted the best defensive OF in the Texas League).
i still think carlson is the better prospect, but it's good to see that gorman is holding his own at 3B.

If he can stick, thats a pretty formidable middle of the order combo in the future.
Make sure they don't get into the same sports car drunk. Better yet, invest in a driver for both of them.
And a AAA membership so they don't change tires on the shoulder of a highway.

Your worried about K/BB ratio for an age 19 -- and barely that -- in an advanced league with a small sample size. His ratio in A ball before the promotion is perfectly fine for his age and skillset.

IMO, his promotions tell you a lot about what he is as a player. Last year, he was promoted out of rookie league for 25 games in A ball. His BB rate promptly dropped, K rate climbed, but his power remained high relative to his BA (ISO). Starting at A ball the next season, he succeeded. Earned a promotion to A+ and his K rate climbed, BB rate dropped, but power remained pretty consistent. Absolutely no reason for worry unless you were convinced he was going to be Bryce Harper and treat the minor leagues like his personal playground. Power is real regardless of the competition, which is an amazing feat. BB rate looks real when he's not completely over his head. K's are part of his game. He's a serious prospect.

I wanted the walk rate closer to 12% (for 2019 total in A/A+ ball) if he's going to K 29-30%. Wanted him closer to Ramos and Kelenic's K/BB ratio at the same level. And get the promotion they got as well.

I don't disagree with your post otherwise. He's going to be a starter and a good player. And he's a serious prospect. No doubt.

My favorite Cardinal coming up in a long time.

The problem with Gorman and K rates is that we might not get to see what an expected K rate for him is at on-age competition until he's 25 and a 3 year MLB vet. If he was K'ing at 20% and walking at 10% at his age and level, then we would be talking about him as the best prospect in baseball, and a generational talent for an organization. Even future HOF caliber players can rarely do that at advanced leagues in their teenage years. Gorman is just not a super prospect and really never tracked toward that. But, even guys like Fernando Tatis Jr. pretty consistently show promotion issues. Consider his '18 AA season. Again, small sample size (smaller than Gormans), but 3.5 BB rate and K rate near 30%, and his ISO tanked. He seems fine now! (That .410 BABIP is noteworthy, though).

I just read an article detialing Nolan Gorman’s offseason training with driveline; Does the fact that a player is open to analytics and technology upgrade a prospect in your mind and vice versa if a guy doesnt belive in it does that give you pause to believe that it may be harder to max out their ability?

Kiley McDaniel
That alone doesn't really mean much. There's plenty of guys that excel with less info and guys that paralyze themselves with too much. We need more info in terms of how the data is changing things

GM Meetings Notebook: Nolan Gorman Impresses Cardinals Brass With Play At Second Base
Like most observers, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak was curious how Nolan Gorman’s transition to second base was going.

Gorman, the No. 40 prospect on the BA Top 100, had been a third baseman his whole life, but after the Cardinals acquired Nolan Arenado from the Rockies prior to last season, he began playing second base to give himself a path to playing time in St. Louis.

Mozeliak said at the general manager’s meetings on Wednesday that he spoke with Cardinals minor league infield coordinator Jose Oquendo about how Gorman’s development was coming along at second base. The answer surprised even Mozeliak.

“Speaking with Jose Oquendo, he’s very bullish on that transition,” Mozeliak said. “I asked him a simple question, like ‘Is he going to be an average second baseman? Maybe offensive-minded, slightly below?’ He just deadpanned me and said ‘He’ll be an above-average defensive second baseman.’ That was really encouraging to hear from someone who’s a really tough grader on infielders.”

Gorman drew solid reviews for his defense at third base in previous years, but second base was a question mark given his physical, muscular build. He proved surehanded with only seven errors in his first year at the position and rapidly improved his footwork turning double plays. By the end of the year, even opposing scouts opined he would be able to play second base in the major leagues.

The Cardinals currently have Gold Glove winner Tommy Edman at second base, but with Gorman’s offensive potential, the position projected to be his as long as he showed he could handle it defensively.

With Gorman’s defense at the keystone drawing better than expected reviews, there is now a strong possibility his time will come sooner rather than later in St. Louis.
