2023 Payroll Thread
GRB emeritus @Fat Strat breaks down the payroll projection for next season, which is always a valuable read. Spoiler alert: A lot hinges on Waino's decision!

Spending money is just smart baseball, simple as that. I am not expecting Dewitt to change his ways, but he really should.

Fat has Waino for $15MM. I really don't see it. I think he's around $9MM.

Re: 2023 Payroll Thread
Why would he take a $9mil cut after posting a 3.71 ERA, 2.8 WAR season? If he's coming back, I don't think he's doing it on a 50% discount. If that's what the Cards offer, I could see him playing his last year for the Braves, which would be super weird.

bWAR went from 3.6 to 1.8.
So if we average that out, it's 3.7 to 2.3. I think it's likely it goes down even more next year. Maybe to around 1.5.
I love Waino, but he's not worth $15mm. If he can get it in Atlanta or anywhere else, good for him.

Re: 2023 Payroll Thread
I remember there being some discussion about Yadi, when he signed his final contract, not being able - per some rule - to accept less than X, something to do with new contracts having to be within some % of the previous contract (I apologise for the complete lack of any numbers or backup for this). Perhaps the same is true of Waino, if he comes back.

But once the contract expires, all bets are off, and a new contract can be less than the old one.
Since Waino's contract is over, he can be signed for any amount.

Yes, he couldn't be extended before his contract was over for a lesser amount of that current contract.Famous Mortimer wrote: ↑October 19 22, 12:25 pmI remember there being some discussion about Yadi, when he signed his final contract, not being able - per some rule - to accept less than X, something to do with new contracts having to be within some % of the previous contract (I apologise for the complete lack of any numbers or backup for this). When it’s owners, it’s “marginal amount of millions.” When it’s everyone else, it’s “fight for every single cent and don’t take a penny less.”
Message always falls flat.

One has money that will last multiple generations. A few million, even 10s of millions to a billionaire is nothing. We hear “billionaire” thrown out a lot, I don’t think people fully understand how much money that is.
99.99999% of the rest of us are living day to day to maintain and provide for ourselves and families, and a few thousands, can make all the difference in the world.
