So then the question becomes that AAV, could he have gotten to 5/160 or thereabouts? Probably. But it's not a guarantee, the time value of money shrinks that difference given his current front-loaded deal, and there's no guarantee that whoever ponies up that deal is going to be consistently competitive(which Arenado clearly cares a lot about). To me it's always seemed the most likely option was not opting out.
Freeman and the Dodgers are a data point in favour of him being able to get a bit more, but who knows.
Freeman got less than Arenado's current AAV. Yes, 3B should command more than a 1B in the abstract, but there's also only so many teams ready to hand out 150+ million, and a fair number of players who are probably higher priority for those teams to give it to(Correa, Turner, Judge, Bogaerts, Rodon).

Yea he was never opting out lol.

This is lining up for a Quintana + bullpen arm off-season.

The cards will put all their eggs in the Jordan walker basket and everyone here will be like great off-season now let you get us a division title.
Everyone here? Maybe one or two people. I’m not sure where you think you are.

Never mind I misread it.

Thought Goold's article today was saying he got a new opt-out but that was the one he just declined.

The funny thing is we're not getting Quintana. The rotation is set.

We probably acquire a catcher in FA or via trade, and maybe another outfielder (but I'm really not certain on that). Once we signed Wainwright, there weren't a lot of easy/obvious places to upgrade on the roster.

Which is funny because if ever there was a team that would benefit from a 6-man rotation, this seems to be it.

You're forgetting the 32-year-old former major leaguer who's been pitching in the Pago Pago leagues for three years with a 1.37 WHIP against tortoises who will be brought to spring training to push Dakota Hudson to the next level.

You joke, but at least one guy on this list:

https://mykbostats.com/players/foreign

will be a Cardinal in 2023.

Casey Kelly is the obvious pick here.
