21 Years Old – Right Handed Pitcher – St. Louis Cardinals (Rookie)
Stop me if you’ve heard this: Gallen was young for his class and the St. Louis Cardinals selected him. Gallen is a sum-of-his-parts pitcher who commands all of his pitches while his athleticism allows for all of them to play up. Gallen throws a 90-93 mph fastball with sink, a solid-average curveball that actually has plus movement in my mind, a below-average changeup that needs development, and a cutter he added recently. The cutter holds the key to his eventual upside, as this pitch would give him a weapon to combat against left-handed hitters in case his changeup does not develop to the level hoped for.
In addition to plus athleticism and youth on his side, Gallen is a high makeup kid who will allow the coaches to develop him further. Sometimes the difference between making it and not making it is mindset, and this kid has the mindset of a pitcher who will do anything to make it.
I went with Gallen over several other prospects for this final spot because I believe he has the tools and requisite track record of success to make it to the big leagues. Big fan of Gallen and would not be surprised to see him make a jump up these rankings next season.
