To the City of St. Louis and Cardinal Nation,

I want to thank each and every one of you sincerely from the bottom of my heart for the love and support you have me and my family for the past 11 years. In my time with the Cardinals, I have been fortunate enough to play on championship teams, and in front of championship fans. This community has reached out and embraced me, and for that I am truly humbled and grateful.

My decision to leave has been incredibly difficult, and your support is the biggest reason why. While I am excited about this new chapter in my life, it was very important to me to let you know that St. Louis has been, and will always remain, in my heart. I have been honored to be able to wear the Cardinal uniform the last 11 seasons, and I want to thank the entire Cardinal organization, my teammates, coaches, managers and staff for everything they have given to me as well.

We call St. Louis home and my family and I are so blessed to have made lifelong relationships in St. Louis that we look forward to continuing for many years to come, and words cannot fully express our gratitude to you all.

Thank you and God bless,
Albert and Deidre

for some reason, this just is grating on me in a way I can't quite put into words.

Shoulda just said, "I got paid! Peace out playas! I just bought a private plane! See you in an interleague series at some point!"
When somebody gives us that big of a middle finger, I wish they'd at least be honest about it. I would have been less pissed if he just said, "[expletive] YOU, GOT MINE! LOL"
\

Jeez, I don't get it. What is he supposed to say?
"I just got paid!!! Peace out playas!!! attached is a picture of my new G6!!! See ya later!!!"

That would have about summed it up.

Nope, disagree ... I think they might have been HOPING that the amount of risk they were willing to float COULD be enough, if Albert wanted to stay badly enough ... but I think they knew that was not the most likely (or maybe, even knew it was not a very likely at all) outcome.
It's really just semantics at this point. But you're right.

Maybe instead of saying I believed they thought their offer was good enough it'd be more accurate to say I don't think offer was just an empty gesture. It wasn't offering to help with dishes as soon as your mom finishes them. They probably never believed their offer would be the most money, they might not have even believed it was the most likely possibility of him signing. I think they had a number in mind they thought was fair and could still build a team with.

Again, the only real issue I had with what you were saying was that it sounded like you said they decided 2 years ago Albert would absolutely without a doubt not remain a Cardinal. You've clarified and we agree.

Reading that was the only thing that elicited tears from me so far. You can still believe the Albert's a good, sincere man and cared about STL, just not enough to overlook the contract delta.
I don't even know that I think he's a good man (or as good as he makes it seem), but the letter seems sincere enough, and I do think he has good feelings about the city. Sounds like he's more pissed at the FO than anything. Reads similar to Edmonds goodbye IIRC, though I think he took out an ad.

Or trade for Brendan Ryan, and give it to him.

Remember when the Pujols team said they passed up a higher offer from the Marlins at 10/275 to sign with the Angels because it wasn't just about the money? Well theres this.

Juan C. Rodriguez
Samson: #marlins offerred nowhere near $275 million for Pujols. Offer a little over $200M

He really did, just take the highest offer and run.

Just realized that my final at-bat seeing Albert live as a Cardinal was Game 2 of the World Series. You know, Albert hammering a ball to right center, starting his home run trot, the crowd goes nuts, annnnnd...caught at the wall.

Pretty much sums up how Pujols made me feel this offseason too..

I'll just say what I said when the contract extension talks broke down. At the end of the day, whether Pujols is a member of the Cardinals or not, my brother will still have ALS, my bills all have to be paid every month, and I've got my own stuff to worry about.

It's been a great 10 years but I'm not losing any sleep over this. Management did what they thought was best for them and Albert did what he thought was best for him. With or without him there will be Cardinals baseball. End of story.
