Just cringed through that interview. Talking about insults and respect, couching all that [expletive] in WWJD-esque verbiage while referring to 100s of millions of dollars on a Christian talk show is incredibly off-putting. They really need to stop talking.

I saw quotes from them earlier in the thread. They basically all just said "thats a lot of money. have fun it with it. have a good career."

You know whats also going to suck? Hearing broadcasts from ESPN all the time describing us as "a team without Pujols." Did you guys hear we don't have Pujols in the lineup anymore?

Every time I read about this it gets messier. Either the Pujols' were in over their head with these negotiations and didn't understand everything that was offered, or somebody (most likely the team or the agent) is lying .

I think they were caught in the tension of the negotations and made a knee-jerk reaction out of spite. Now I think they regret it. They'll get over it, though. The Angels will feel like home after a while. But they'll never have what they had in St. Louis. That was the intangible tied to this decision all along and it's something they didn't weigh heavily enough based on their recent actions.

Clearly you do not understand how hard it was for Pujols to go through people offering him only $200MM. The agony of having to decide which team was going to pay you more than you could ever hope to spend!

I think it comes down to this--Pujols was seeking that "respect", but the Cardinals as an organization don't need to pay a guy to be their symbol. They're the goddamn Cardinals. 11 championships. Dozens of HOF'ers. Sure, Pujols could have been there next to Musial, but the Cardinals don't *need* a guy to be symbolic of the franchise. They already have their pick. So they don't need to lay out that kind of cash (oops, I mean "respect") to a player. Teams like the Angels (who have a rally monkey) and the Marlins (can't seem to settle on a non-hideous color scheme) do need to pay to boost their franchise.

Sorry Pujols. The Cardinals didn't need you as much as you thought they should.
