Maybe I have him all wrong. Perhaps he's talking to the ref about Proust each and every dead ball, excluding none. The problem is I'm not sure how many MLS refs know how to read.
I wonder how things would have worked out for him in England or Europe had he been there long. Are there British soccer stars who just don't appear to be that into soccer? I would guess they're not treated well.
Phillips' piece is good, but his (almost entirely speculative) points about music fail, IMO. They illlustrate to me (keeping in mind that I'm sort of a cynical bastard) Phillips' own music snobbery far more than anything about Donovan. I think he should have found a different framework there. I do definitely feel like I understand LD (or at least another point of view about him) better.

I think allegiance to club over country is a positive sign of the sport's health in the US. Doubt it's very prevelant outside of Portland or Seattle, though. You are just ahead of the curve.

The Quakes as a whole are loathsome, but how has KC gotten away with being so dirty/physical without facing the same scrutiny as San Jose? Is it because the western conference gets much more attention and has better, more vocal fan bases?
The reverence for the MNT is strange. I'm sure I just haven't found the right ones (there are more than enough who are will tell you they're the better fan and why) but when I point out that I really dislike when Will Johnson acts the douche, no Timbers fan gets all indignant, even if they are more forgiving or disagree, and that's probably true of most club's fans.
Lenhart was just a point. You don't have to see much of him to realize that his skill and intent isn't playing soccer. Such a sack of excrement.
I guess I would just in a gameday kind of way. I'm not that kind of club over country guy. I can't really think of any Sounders I hate right now. Evans had some pretty interesting quotes about playing in Portland last year (even though he never had at that point), but it didn't bother me when he scored against Jamaica (his selection for the team seemed questionable to me, though). Alonso has some serious temper issues, I'm sure there are some Timbers fans who hate him, but I just love watching him play. EJ's the kind of gasbag every team seems to have. Montero was a petulant ass, but he's gone now, and I never have to see him again--which I'm grateful for, because I did hate him. Sigi says dumb stuff pretty much every time he's given a microphone, but I can't say I hate him.
But I don't know, to read this paragraph, and then consider what I said about Donovan, or especially Wondolowski, feels a bit like backpedaling to me. Maybe ask me after the next SEA/POR game.
The Dempsey thing keeps gaining steam where I expect it to lose steam. It would be fun to have him in the league, but it would make the Seattle team that should have been scary already (even despite injuries) terrifying.
You could field most MLS teams several times over for the money Dempsey earns. You could field the Timbers for roughly Obafemi Martins' money. That team either wins the cup or is a complete failure. I hope the latter is true and the Timbers play a role in it.
That intro was a little Heat-esque. I guess he came back to sell rap albums? I'm genuinely excited to have him back in the league, and in a place where I'll get to see him play often. Now there are the Sounders (naturally), the Red Bulls, and then 17 teams with entire rosters that don't make nearly as much, in lots of cases not a quarter, as Clint Dempsey. To paraphrase everyone's favorite, Rush Limbaugh; I hope they fail.
Also, I won't say it's scandalous, but the new (or finally revealed) rules set in play to get him to Seattle are, at the very least, dubious. Garber is always talking about the importance of parity. He surely hasn't demonstrated any commitment this week.
