Cards get Jeff Weaver

I will go on the record as being pleasantly surprised in the postseason with how well Weaver controlled his breaking pitches (which he had struggled with), and the late movement he was getting on his fastball.

He still had the tendency to make a bad pitch when he got rattled (see the Casey HR right after Duncan's error), but overall he impressed the heck out of me in the postseason.

That said, I'd still be leary of signing him. If he comes back, OK. If he doesn't, I won't lose a lot of sleep as long as we pick up someone similar. I still view him as a ticking time bomb who may stop listening to Duncan's advice if some adversity returns.

No one expected the October we got out of Weaver. But it was interesting re-reading the thread with all of the updated avatars and sigs featuring our World Title.

Well, I was surprised Weaver did as well as he did, but on another board before I joined GRB, I was pining for him, because he was a perfect reclaimation project for Bowie.

I just wish Weaver had as much movement on his pitches when he was with the Tigers. I was floored when I seen those clips on Friday night. The ball was dancing all over the place. Whatever happened to that?

Seriously though, he still has some pretty sharp movement on most of his pitches. And sometimes, the less detectable movement on TV ends up being better, because it's so late the hitters don't have time to adjust. How many times Friday night did it look like the Tigers were going to crush one on the outside part of the plate, only to see the ball slide into Yadi's glove, just out of their reach?

Case in point, Game 1 against the Padres. Peavy looked like he had impossible movement in on righties with an upper 90's fastball. Yet the Cards were able to dial in and make contact. Meanwhile, Carpenter didn't look like he had as much movement, but he was much more succesful.
