With a stellar lineup that includes rock legend Van Morrison, alt-country queen Lucinda Williams, roots travellers Wilco and Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, the inaugural edition of CityFolk can’t help but stand out from this summer’s crop of Ottawa-area festivals.

When I signed up for my 99 cent Spotify trial I discovered an extended version of Moondance that's really great, and includes this which somehow didn't make the cut for the album:

Just catching up to the Father John Misty hype. It's over the top, but the dude's a pretty talented songwriter, if you don't mind a little hyperbole.

Spoilering this because the song title itself has a no-no word in it. But this song is gorgeous and heartbreaking.

There are some awesome moments between the guitar and bass in the solo for Children of Children, and a strange ambiance like they recorded outside or with a window open or something. It's a beautiful song. He's so good at writing that stuff. Outfit is probably my favorite DBT song.

Whoops, my mistake. Couldn't have been wronger about Children of Children.

"Children of Children", which serves as the album's centerpiece, wrestles with some tangled issues in a family with "five full generations living," but Isbell seems more interested in the romance of sepia-tone photographs than in the reality of a great-great-grandparent. It's an odd hull of a song, whose weirdest element is the way it borrows the female hardship of childbirth only to bolster male drama: "All the years I took from her just by being born," the narrator says of his teenage mother, even though he's really talking about the burden of his own guilt. The arrangement is spare and languorous, with Derry DeBorja's Mellotron adding a windswept quality to the music. Isbell and producer Dave Cobb put that instrument to fine use on Southeastern, where it played like a jerry-rigged orchestra and conveyed an immense sense of isolation. On "Children", however, the ersatz strings generate only ersatz drama.

Sometimes I go over to pitchfork to shame the sonbs to myself. Apparently, this song I thought was touching and beautiful is mysogynistic (I mean, c'mon, seriously?) and chooses the wrong things to be interested in.
