Even though most of us wouldn't be able to pick each other out of a lineup (well, me and mini-Miles aside) i still felt as though i knew the regular posters just as well (and in some cases better) than some friends and family. In all seriousness, i will miss this place greatly.

I have fairly close family members that I know less well than a number of GRB peeps.

The ban hammer is in effect until the last possible moment. So if you want to put "Member in Good Standing at Gateway Redbirds" on your resume then think before you post. I'm only powerful for the next 10 days and I'm feeling it baby...

I felt this way, too, when I posted more regularly.

Anytime, after I had read a funny story from here, I would share it with friends. As I'd start, I'd realize where it actually originated. Rather than explain the board, I'd simply say,"A friend told me..."

I'd get "caught" sometimes, with my siblings, for example when I might mention my friend, the U of L professor (because, who am I kidding, sigh provided ample hilarious stories!) and they - Louisville residents - knew I didn't know people there!

I can't tell you how many times I've gotten looks where I've referenced talking to "a guy" about whatever and the person I'm talking to wants more detail on who and I just try and gloss over it.

My Dad understands the internet and how to use it for simple things. There is no way he would grasp how a message board works. Whenever we're talking Cards baseball I inevitably think of something I read here and do the same thing.

Ha. Same way lipp. I remember about 3 years ago talking to my dad about the cardinals. He asked who was coming up on the farm. So I told him about reyes. Then he asked how I knew so much about miller and martinez and Taveras before he had ever heard of them (he lives in stl and listens to the radio and reads the paper but obviously prospects don't get much attention until they're knocking on the door). We were drinking and I decided to tell him about this place. Which he completely didn't understand.

The convo went something like this. Well, there's this guy on this cardinals message board named phins. After every draft he will write about each player selected and give his thoughts and scouting report. Then he will do a top 30 or whatever prospects list of thr cardinals too. Following that and reading what other people who have seen guys say, you get a pretty good idea of what a player is going to be.

He goes...what's a message board and what's a phins?

Oh boy.....way over his head.

So I just said something like yeah...he's just a cards fan that follows all the mlb prospects before they're drafted.

Where does he work?

I have no clue.

Does he work in baseball?

Not to my knowledge.

Well then how does he predict who is going to be good so well.

I tried to explain that there are hundreds of people just talking about these guys as they come up and it'd a group effort so to speak. Some are better at analyzing swings and mechanics. Others are better at using stats to project the future if players and together it is a ton of useful info.

He didn't understand. Eventually I just said that it's a cumulative effort by a bunch if fans trying to figure it out and I read through it all and offer my thoughts when I see someone in person. Still don't think he understood.

my folks are aware that i go here/get info here and so if i'm about to say something "smrt" i'll usually preface "on that cardinal message board..." or "you know that cardinal message board i go to?"

even like i've mentioned how i'm not really much into hockey but there's a good contingent on the board that is so i can sorta follow along and get excited, especially during the playoffs, 'cause the thread was.

i know i've mentioned some of the random threads in social too.

Also, it should be noted that conversation took place the night that Taveras made his debut and hit a dinger in the game. So...it was after ~5 years of successfully predicting which players from the farm system were going to be good. To wit, Craig, Miller, Martinez, Rasmus, Wong, and Lynn were all guys I had told him about so it's not like there wasn't a solid background of being correct. And, calling out Reyes as a guy to be excited about back in 2013 or 14 was pretty much only for those that really paid attention.
