Re: Coronavirus
1,800 plus died in New Jersey today? Seems odd.

That's where I have been following all along. Seems pretty accurate but that number...I have no idea.

hmm...that is weird. when you click on NJ and see the counties it has 1854 unassigned. i assume it's some sort of error. wapo's tracker has NJ at 23 deaths today, fwiw.

Re: Coronavirus
CDC now saying up to 10 times more infections than previously thought. Cool. Does that mean we are in better shape or worse shape?

Re: Coronavirus
Things like this are why the death rate in ND from COVID is so low:
90 mph. Talk about the fast and the furious.
https://bismarcktribune.com/news/local/ ... op-story-1An 80-year-old Hazen man accused of pointing a gun at several people has pleaded not guilty to 17 felonies and two misdemeanors stemming from the April incident in the town, according to Mercer County State’s Attorney Jessica Binder.
James Higginbotham on April 4 allegedly entered the home of his stepdaughter and pointed a gun at adults and juveniles. He would not allow people to leave and at times threatened to kill himself and others, according to a police affidavit. He demanded to see the stepdaughter's mother, even though an order prohibiting him from contacting her had been in place since January, according to the affidavit.
A man in the home was able to get the weapon after Higginbotham sat at the kitchen table, authorities say. Higginbotham then allegedly led police through town on a chase nearing 90 mph in 35 mph zones. Authorities say he rammed two patrol cars when he left the house and another when police boxed him in to end the chase.
90 mph. Talk about the fast and the furious.

Re: Coronavirus
It's been apparent for a while that this was the route the country was going to take. Requiring/wearing masks would help to some degree, but the country had one shot to eradicate it and didn't, not saying that we should/shouldn't have, just saying that time has come and gone and it would require even more painful measures now than would have been necessary back in March/April.
So the narrative became to flatten the curve. And, by and large, the curve was flattened. The issue now is, how to keep it flattened, how to make it a plateau so to speak. And, how high is that plateau going to be? The economy still isn't 're-opened' and won't be for some time. And, there's likely a somewhat direct correlation between 'reopening' and 'new cases'.
Some back of napkin calcs shows we have a lot of pain let to endure. Even assuming a population can absorb 3% of the population getting infected before the hospitals are overrun (roughly based on what happened in NYC) which is a completely optimistic assumption, it would take 20 months before 60% have been infected which is the low end of estimates I've seen for herd immunity. And, there's no guarantee said immunity would last for even 6 months.

Re: Coronavirus
the US took the financial hit for nothing. every country took a financial hit during the initial phase of the virus but most have succeeded in flattening the virus and are now reopening and can get their economies back going. new zealand is having rubgy games with 25k fans in the stands. eiffel tower is back open.
The US still has a huge virus problem which of course means the economy is going to continue to stall. a complete waste of effort and resources.
