Most likely tomorrow we will cross 3,000,000 cases that have recovered. So that's something.

According to worldometer we’re currently at 180k+\- dead and 3.2 million +\- recovered. Florida has 65k recovered and 520k + active which probably needs to be cleaned up. Case fatality rate is somewhere around 5% and decreasing. Infection fatality rate still is tough to calc but likely an order of magnitude lower.

It might be too early, but is there a post-infection monitoring protocol that the medical community has generally agreed to do? I've heard speculation/small sample size studies that have talked about the evidence of long-term, internal organ damage to a decent percentage of COVID patients. In our quest to learn as much as we can about this virus and its full effect on us, it would be good if a consensus could be formed about what to consistently monitor long-term in patients.

There are a few states in which the recovery number is most likely far short of reality.

Yeah, there are more and more articles coming out about this. Google "Covid Long Haulers". It's a thing. I don't have time to through search results but I think I remember seeing a couple studies that as many as possibly HALF of "recovered" patients have heart damage. Other patients have permanent lung damage. Some patients are reporting permanent memory issues and brain functioning.

Just saying X number of patients died and Y number have recovered is missing a HUGE part of the story.

Your last sentence is where my post was heading. My concern is that saying you've "recovered" from this... might not really be true in a not-small percentage of cases. And if there are long-lasting effects that we don't usually see from other viruses like the common cold or flu, then it'll ultimately prove to be short-sighted that we judge... I guess you'd call it "success" (?) by ridding oneself of overt symptoms like fever, fatigue, etc.

What makes me feel better about the entire situation is that if my feeble brain can think of something like this, way more intelligent people in the medical field have already thought of it and are actively working on a plan. At least I would think/hope that's happening.

I don't think anyone is trying to ignore long term effects, which exist with any virus, but just talk about the numbers we currently have to establish a mortality rate. At least, that was the purpose of my post in response to Leroy's.

If you want to talk more about long term effects, here's an article that I think gives a pretty good synopsis of the studies that have been done and what studies are underway.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/07 ... m%20damage.

As you'd expect, its not fun reading.

But, there are reasons for optimism within.

Here's some information about a study that looked into COVID transmission. It includes a really helpful, color-coded chart for various interactions, which I have posted below.

The article also ends on an ominous note for those who have children attending school in-person:

6 feet may not always be enough for social distancing, new report suggests

The current guidance for safe social distancing may not be enough to stop the spread of COVID-19, a new analysis suggests.

In the report, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Oxford say other factors, such as ventilation, crowd size, exposure time and whether face coverings are worn, need to be considered, as well.

Lydia Bourouiba, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at MIT and co-author of the report, said, "It's not just 6 feet and then everything else can be ignored or just mask and everything else can be ignored or just ventilation and everything else can be ignored." It's important to distinguish between high-risk and low-risk exposure, Bourouiba said.

The researchers developed a color-coded chart to show how transmission occurs, based on different types of exposure. "This is a way to synthesize and, in some sense, translate complex notions into what we hope is an accessible color-coded chart," Bourouiba said.

My Mom had an antibody test and found out this morning she had covid. She was terribly sick in March, so before it was thought to be in our area. She was down for almost a month and had to be on oxygen but not a respirator. At the time we all thought it was the flu and pneumonia. Her doctor is now convinced she had covid then. She still has lingering breathing issues.
