But, instead of setting an o/u on when the pandemic 'ends', perhaps the question can be turned around. Perhaps the question is simply, how long are people willing to keep this up? If a vaccine can't be made, how long will people stay away from: school, family, flying on planes, sporting events, etc? If I said, we'll have a vaccine in the year 2025, who will keep their kids out of school for the next 5 years? Who won't have weddings, family reunions, holidays, etc? Because, that may in fact be the more apropos question.
Excellent discussion topic, AW.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I think the "long-term effects" aspect of this virus will somewhat influence the answer to your questions. As time goes on, if we start to see more and more evidence that the long-term effects are a real concern and a statistically significant risk, we may see people take this more seriously as time goes on... especially if a vaccine doesn't arrive until... 2023? 2024?... AND... if that lack of vaccine is coupled with a scenario where we don't devise some sort of effective treatment protocol.

Conversely, if the long-term effects turn out to be incredibly minimal, I can see a scenario where people will say, "Eh, the mortality rate is not that high. I'll roll the dice and go completely back to normal. And whenever you get a vaccine made, let me know and maybe I'll get it... if I have time and its convenient and it doesn't cost too much."

Yep. We're at 81K new cases today. Previous high was just over 79K back on July 24.

There are 2.8 million ACTIVE cases right now in the USA. We're slowly approaching 1% of the population with an active case of coronavirus.

Our national strategy appears to be more than conceding defeat; it's conceding defeat while claiming victory. We're basically a failed nation state.

Don't be too kind, sir. We actually do not even have a strategy.

Well this got ugly fast. My wife calls me crying at lunch today, she has been working with someone who is covid positive for almost a week now. Because the person isn't showing signs, her Trumper, covid denier boss told the lady she needed to be at work. My wife just found out today. I told her to come home. Meanwhile, I found out who her bosses boss is and I called them and completely unloaded. I'm pretty sure I made that lady cry. She said she would take immediate action and I said we are too, as we have a lawyer. Well my wife gets a message a little bit ago that her boss, her bosses boss, and like four other people have been fired. [expletive] good.

If my wife gets sick, we are suing the living [expletive] out of them.

Good for you. Who does she work for - small business or corporation?

This pandemic is getting caught up in semantics. Should you panic? Are you frantic? The virus doesn't care if you're Hispanic, or doing anything tantric. Ok, I'll stop with the rhyming antics.
Fauci: The US is still in the first wave of COVID-19

The U.S. is well into its third peak of the coronavirus, marking a new record for daily cases at more than 83,000 over the weekend. The total case count has surpassed 8.6 million and the death toll rose above 225,000. Globally, more than 43 million have been affected with more than 1.1 million dead.

In recent days, some experts and reports have referred to this as a third wave, while others refer to it as either an elongated first wave or a second wave. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, settled the debate this Monday at Yahoo Finance’s annual All Markets Summit. “I look at it more as an elongated — and an exacerbation of — the original first wave,” Fauci said.

Fauci also said it boils down to semantics. “You want to call it the third wave or an extended first wave, no matter how you look at it, it's not good news,” he said.

Tara Smith, an epidemiologist at Kent State University, told Yahoo Finance the idea of a wave is not as relevant for the U.S. outbreak as it was during the 1918 flu pandemic. “It was clear for 1918 because there seemed to be clear distinctions between the various flare-ups, but here, we've never gone back to baseline between peaks of cases. I'd say this is the third surge or peak,” she said.

Dr. Shira Doron, an infectious disease physician at Tufts Medical Center echoed Fauci's declaration of an elongated first wave. “Only when looking back at the shape of a curve can you truly call something a peak or wave. It’s also important to mention that the overall U.S. graph looks very different than individual state graphs,” Doron said. “The U.S. as a whole, however, never declined to low levels after its first peak, which is why some people say we are still in the ‘first wave,’” she said. “Overall, I think it’s more a matter of semantics than something scientific.”

She works for a huge company pretending to be a small business. They try and keep it hush hush but they are owned by a huge health care provider.
