The Cardinals need to clean house from top to bottom for pitching development/coaching. Even with the organizational philosophy to prioritize “safe” arms vs. boom/bust talent, they have been completely inept for years in developing both SP’s and RP’s in-house. We end up pissing away half the payroll on Matz and VerHagen type free agents when we should be at least able to turn pitchers with decent stuff like Hudson into rotation or bullpen fillers. If Alcantara or Gallen had stayed put, does anyone have confidence that the Cardinals’ coaching staff would have them at Cy Young levels? I do not, and that is a huge problem.

Pay whatever it takes to hire guys from successful systems, like the Guardians. If the Cardinals could develop pitching even halfway well, they could easily be contenders with their self-imposed mid-tier payroll with how well they have developed decent lineup fillers to supplement the stars.

It’s clear that DeWitt would need to have an extremely unlikely epiphany to find the right GM and give him the bandwidth to do what’s necessary. It doesn’t mean BDW needs to turn into Steve Cohen, just increase spending to a reasonable level based on the expectations the franchise warrants. Far more important is revamping the organizational philosophy to move it into the 21st century.

They haven't created any position player stars but they have produced a lot of solid/good contributors, more than most teams

The pitching, they haven't even produced an adequate starter in I don't know how long. Flaherty for a year and a half, if that counts?

If we produced the pitching equivalent of starters that we have position players, we'd be like 15 games over .500
