I know this is basically the conversation from the scene in Moneyball between Beane and Henry…but why can’t the Cardinals just run their org like Cleveland and Tampa Bay, only spending $200m on major league payroll instead of $50m?

The Cardinals have the 5th highest payroll allocation to starting pitching in baseball, and 26th in starter ERA

If that doesn't spell out how poorly Mo has mismanaged funds...

The rotation improvement is going to have to come via the trade I believe. They may sign 1 free agent pitcher, but that's it.

They need at least 1 front line starter, and a few other good value options. Keeping Montgomery would be ideal, but that seems unlikely, so he should be traded at the deadline.

Nootbaar, Carlson, O'Neill, Edman, Baker, Yepez, Flaherty, Hicks, Dejong, Montgomery any combination of these guys should be traded for two controllable arms between the deadline and the offseason.

They need to badly fix the bullpen too

Would keep Noot and Tommy, but agree with dumping the rest.

I would be in favor of trading Monty and then signing him in free agency.

Agree that a trade for a starter may be required. Bieber might be an option since he is a free agent after next season.

How about a rotation of Bieber, Stroman (opt out required), Monty, Mikolas, and Libby/Matz?

i mentioned last season that i was done with the cardinals until ownership changed which obviously never going to be the case and here i am. All hat no cattle i suppose.

i'll give them the trade deadline to see what they do. if nothing of significance is done in either direction, then im officially off the bandwagon until mo is fired. That'd be a nice a start.

This organization is rotten to the core so it's going to be a long long rebuild and im simply over the arrogance of mozeliak and the complacency of Dewitt.

Walker is looking more and more like a 1B/Dh, which is fine, but at some point this organization needs to come have a come to jesus moment and reboot. Not sure there's much in the minors to form a core to build around. Masynn winn may just be JAG in the majors. no pitching other than tink Hence but who knows with him. Could end up being another Liberatore. It's going to take multiple arms to get back in the right direction and arms are something we don't have.

Above all else, its going to take a different philosophy in development because whatever theyre doing, it's not working.

The run of success has been great so i think the fans would be somewhat forgiving if this organization went thru a rebuild. I've been harping on it for awhile.

the FO lack of understanding their players they keep/trade is baffling...

trade alcantara, gallen (called that one when it happened), randy, garcia...hell oviedo has the same ERA as Flaherty and Mikolas...and then we keep guys past their peak trade value like carlson

I think it speaks more to the abysmal player development (especially starting pitching), which forces them to buy pitchers on the open market.

It's impossible to have successful roster management if you're not building a core from within.

Wainwright’s legacy contract skews the rotation payroll numbers a bit. He’s an unusual, isolated case. But the spending is bad and the development is worse. It’s also mostly the same rotation that won 93 games and was 10th in ERA last season.

yes correct.

and they serve a need, just not with our team. we have no place for them. look at Burleson's stats in the minors before we ever brought him up...that's valuable for a team that needs his particular skill and could have brought something back our team could use in return (minor league arm).

you get the best pitching prospect the other team will offer for them and move on.

having them on our team serves no purpose other than diminishing their value.

I still want Bieber on the Cardinals, but I do have concerns going forward. He's still a good pitcher but his K% has dropped significantly. He's pitching more like a number 3 this year. I would go after him, but I wouldn't give up what I would have maybe 2-3 years ago.
