When asked about the rotation, he says “we have 3 open spots right now”, then “well, not right now”, then chuckles and says “please delete that”.
If he adds a thin moustache, he begins to look like Vincent Price.

lol yep, and the ok-ish pitcher(s) they'll add (and combine Matz) and you could've actually had an ace like Nola

Who I think they'll go after:
Lance Lynn
Giolito
They should really trade for Lynn now if they want him, get a good look down the stretch and evaluate just picking up his option. Plus they'll need arms when they trade Jack and Monty.

Then you have to make one real trade and one free agent signing. Julio Urias and Bryan Woo?

Lots of ways to go but that's doable and there are three attainable guys with tons of upside.

If they could develop any pitching AT ALL, they wouldn't have to pursue ok-ish pitchers OR Nola OR Matz.

That's the real problem. They get absolutely no starting pitching from within the system, so they have to pay premium for it on the open market.

If you're going to trade for a guy like Lynn, why not just keep Montgomery instead?

Even though that’s true (and they’ve only been marginally better at developing position players), you still have to do something for next year at a minimum. Otherwise you might as well ship Goldy off too.

They have three open spots next year and Lynn could nail one down with just a trade right now. Keeping Montgomery is far from automatic.

Where was this energy last offseason? Or the offseason before that?

Cost; I don’t believe the FO will pay what it will cost to sign montgomery

Even if they do those guys are not mutually exclusive
