First time all season I feel good about our 1-2-3 starters.
Too bad 4 and 5 are terrible.
And the bullpen is putrid.

Bumping this from 5 days ago since Mo talked about just this thing in the interview today. Surprised y'all didn't pick up on it when I mentioned it.Joe Shlabotnik wrote: ↑July 12 23, 10:43 amOne thing I don't see addressed in the interview or here with our analysis: How much did the rules change affect the 'pitch to contact' strategy and thus, cause us to miss how much our pitchers would suffer by the new rules? Maybe this was an unintended consequence that nobody saw coming?

That's still a good starting pitcher. You certainly aren't obtaining three starting pitchers better than that.Socnorb11 wrote: ↑July 17 23, 5:54 pmRight.CardsofSTL wrote: ↑July 17 23, 5:43 pmPujols and Molina were last year and Waino this year. In the last 4 years, he's had 1 year where I feel like he was more than just ordinary. If you're just looking for warm bodies, wait until the off-season, unless they're just giving away Lance Lynn at the deadline.
2020: 3.32 ERA, 4.19 FIP
2021: 2.69 ERA, 3.32 FIP
2022: 3.99 ERA, 3.82 FIP
2019 and 2021 were very good years, 2020 was a short season so it's hard to judge, 2022 was solid.
I'm wary of him because he turns 37 next year and I prefer to go after someone younger, but I wouldn't be mad Lynn. He just can't be their big pitching acquisition.
Acquiring Lynn doesn't really change much of anything. It's just continuing the cycle in my opinion. You can't keep cobbling together a staff from year to year.
If the Cardinals found one starter better, then one at this level, then one a tier below but with some potential, you'd have to be pretty happy with how things went. I don't see a path to an elite starting rotation next year.

If nothing else, I'm happy to hear what I'm hearing from Mozeliak. Saying the right things.
Do what is necessary to get a starting pitcher who can front a rotation with more than this year of control.

With Ivan Herrera hitting so well since being called up you have to think this might put Andrew Knizner on the trading block.

Carlson won’t go for nothing. You need four outfielders. O’Neill is often injured and even less productive than Carlson the past two seasons. Now of they can get a real contributor for Carlson, that’s another story.

I hope they keep Carlson, unless they are blown away with an offer.
