Not sure I agree with this.cardsfantx wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:48 amthe trade deadline is exactly 2 weeks from today...there just isn't enough time to showcaseSpider John wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:38 amI'm assuming that naming O'Neil as starter is just a showcase for him before the deadline.
he could go bananas the next 2 weeks and that's not going to change any teams opinion of him
and staying healthy for 2 weeks shows nothing either

Any of the cardinal outfielders have been around long enough that teams would know what they're getting. That said, a hot bat going into a playoff race can't hurt. But O'Neill isn't some trade lot 120,000 mile Honda Civic that you tie an air freshener on the rearview mirror and call it a low mileage sport utility vehicle. O'Neil is probably a Tesla anyway, great raw performance but terrible build quality and always finds itself back in the shop.

Yeah. Lets put this in a vacuum; A bad 2 weeks gets you almost nothing in return, maybe somebodys DFA candidate. But a hot weeks, gets you more than nothing, and might get you more from a specific team that is on the cusp of a Playoff berth.dmarx114 wrote: ↑July 18 23, 9:07 amNot sure I agree with this.cardsfantx wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:48 amthe trade deadline is exactly 2 weeks from today...there just isn't enough time to showcaseSpider John wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:38 amI'm assuming that naming O'Neil as starter is just a showcase for him before the deadline.

It would only show that he's currently healthy. Do you really think 2 weeks is going to drastically change the well-established scouting report on O'Neill that he has great power and defensive ability, but streaky as hell and oft injured?dmarx114 wrote: ↑July 18 23, 9:07 amNot sure I agree with this.cardsfantx wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:48 amthe trade deadline is exactly 2 weeks from today...there just isn't enough time to showcaseSpider John wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:38 amI'm assuming that naming O'Neil as starter is just a showcase for him before the deadline.

I think the only thing scouts will be looking at is how he's playing defensively, and if he appears healthy. If he rakes or not likely doesn't matter. They know what they are trying to buy.

I don't understand why they would just hand him the starting job when he's stunk even when healthy. Of course, who can understand the FO these days.cardsfantx wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:48 amthe trade deadline is exactly 2 weeks from today...there just isn't enough time to showcaseSpider John wrote: ↑July 18 23, 8:38 amI'm assuming that naming O'Neil as starter is just a showcase for him before the deadline.

To me it's pretty simply:
They can get more for Carlson than they can for O'Neill. Carlson by himself can potentially fetch them a minor league pitching prospect with some mid rotation starter upside, Carlson and another prospect can probably get you a current major leaguer who is mid rotation guy already that's cost controlled.
O'Neill by himself or in a package is more than likely not gonna get you much of anything currently.
So they will get the rest of the year to see if he can build some consistency, and if not, they can address the outfield in the offseason. But for the trade deadline, he doesn't provide much value sitting him on the bench and then getting pennies on the dollar in a trade.

Yeah that must be it. One reason to trade Carlson over O'Neill is that Carlson actually has trade valueMrCrowesGarden wrote: ↑July 18 23, 6:38 amI feel like Carlson and Edman are the two guys you can trade who will return back a player with term who’s more than a lottery ticket.

Yep. Just what I was saying. This season is dead anyway, so O'neill starting is whatever. It's not about winning games for this season. Carlson or O'Neill starting isn't going to change anything for this year, but starting O'Neill at least give them an opportunity to see what he can do (whether he performs and they keep him/he performs and they use him during the off season to flip him after building up his value again or he sucks and they address the OF in the offseason) and allows them to use the valuable asset (Carlson) as trade bait to help fix the rotation.haltz wrote: ↑July 18 23, 9:43 amYeah that must be it. sure, absolutely Carlson can fetch you more in a trade than o'neill
but now you've just weakened the weakest part of your position players; the OF
Carlson is the best def CF we have and believe it or not, the most consistent offensively we have with noot (stats are about identical. we don't know what walker can be at this level offensively yet)
We ain't signing an OF as we have too many holes in the rotation to fill this offseason, so 2024 your starting OF is...
Noot, Walker, O'Neill (Burleson, but he cannot play CF so you really don't have a good 4th OF. please stop with Edman and Donovan. both hurt their throwing arms and prob has something to do with playing so much OF)
That's terrible
I'm all for trading anyone....but if Carlson is traded, the haul better be significant, as you just weakened your OF, which is questionable at best. (not a return like we've gotten from TB with OF Randy and Pham)
