I'm all for trading anyone....but if Carlson is traded, the haul better be significant, as you just weakened your OF, which is questionable at best. (not a return like we've gotten from TB with OF Randy and Pham)
I think the Arozarena trade would be comparable with Carlson, maybe even a better prospect. Looks bad now, obviously, but it was a calculated gamble trading for Liberatore that backfired. Arozarena didn't really break out until age 25 (if you view the shortened COVID-season but stellar POs as an indicator) or 26 (first full-season).
Carlson's development has been botched since he's been in the bigs. I don't think he'll reach his potential in St. Louis and trading him for a high-caliber pitching prospect or someone who is still young but with term and has had similar challenges with development might be a wise approach.
sure, absolutely Carlson can fetch you more in a trade than o'neill
but now you've just weakened the weakest part of your position players; the OF
Carlson is the best def CF we have and believe it or not, the most consistent offensively we have with noot (stats are about identical. we don't know what walker can be at this level offensively yet)
We ain't signing an OF as we have too many holes in the rotation to fill this offseason, so 2024 your starting OF is...
Noot, Walker, O'Neill (Burleson, but he cannot play CF so you really don't have a good 4th OF. please stop with Edman and Donovan. both hurt their throwing arms and prob has something to do with playing so much OF)
That's terrible

The outfield is the most uncertain of the fielding positions, but it's also the area where we have a surplus of options.
I don't believe the drop off (if there even is one) between O'Neil and Carlson is that big. Definitely not big enough to make up for their difference in trade value, where you can fill a void in a much more significant hole in the team (the rotation).
Now if they trade Carlson for some 20th prospect in another team's system deal, then I'm with you. But I don't think they're gonna be giving him away.
I feel like Carlson and Edman are the two guys you can trade who will return back a player with term who’s more than a lottery ticket.
Yeah that must be it. One reason to trade Carlson over O'Neill is that Carlson actually has trade value
I feel like we are selling O'Neill a bit short here. He will be one of the toolsiest players available at the deadline, with a year and a half of control left. Everyone is aware of his downsides, but if he's in a hot streak during the playoffs he can do a lot of damage.
He's gotta be worth at least a controlled, reliable RP with strikeout stuff, or a back-end rotation prospect. Carlson would probably fetch you more due to his years of control, but contenders aren't trading for a Carlson to be the X factor for them in the postseason. In my mind, if you're going to trade him you'll do better in the offseason.
Right-hander Casey Lawrence was released by the Blue Jays recently, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. Lawrence triggered an opt-out in his deal, reports Eric Treuden of Jays Journal, which led to him returning to the open market. Treuden adds that the righty is already working on a new deal, with the Cardinals and Yankees seeming to be in the mix.
soon to be 36 year old who sucks and is pitch to contact? we're in there man...
just bring up mcgreevy, graceffo, thomas etc and let them throw some ML innings if we trade monty/flaherty (Thomas is only one currently on the 40 man, but obv trading will open up spots)
Maybe given our record of trading for pitching prospects who then turn into pumpkins once they enter our farm system, we should focus on major-league ready arms at the deadline or free agents in the offseason?
I mean, who is the last starting pitching prospect we've acquired by draft or through a trade who ended up becoming good as a Cardinal? Waino?

I think Carlos Martinez. Flaherty had a blip, of course.

What's the huge gap in Lawrence's MLB career between 2018 and 2022? Injury and/or prolonged suckage?
Casey Lawrence sounds like the name of a child actor with a recurring unfunny role on Full House.

Lance Lynn got objectively good before we let him go.
