Would much rather to be in contention and move pieces like Oviedo to give us a better chance to win this season.

Trading a few rentals is hardly a reset.

Not every prospect needs to be a star or starter to be useful. Depth makes a difference. Maybe we get a mid or botr starter out of one of these guys. Maybe this year isn’t as bad if we have a few more arms to bring up to stabilize the pen early on. We probably at least get some arms for the pen down the road.

Or, as some have alluded, potential off-season trade chips. And, the more lottery tickets you have, the better chances of catching a win.

We needed to restock and these arms would have been gone after this year anyways.

A reset would be trading guys like Arenado and Goldschmidt for MLB players or like what the Red Sox did with the Dodgers when they traded Gonzalez and Beckett.

This is trimming roster fat for guys who likely wouldn’t be in STL in 2024.

A reset isn’t just changing players. It’s changing organizational philosophy regarding the types of pitchers they need. It’s accumulating assets instead of spending them. It’s balancing a roster completely out of balance. The pitchers on the 40 man were nowhere near good enough to win a championship. Most of them will be gone.

This season is at least opening up clear spots in the rotation and bullpen that need to be filled, without Mo just saying “well we already have too many pitchers for those spots, so we need to see what we have first”. We all had a pretty strong hunch as to what we had.

Commenting on the actual trade here, TON would make a lot of sense for Cleveland who needs power as much as anything. Dead last in the AL in home runs. DeJong too. I’m surprised they would be shopping Civale, but they would probably give Cal Quantrill away with attaching a prospect.
