According mlb.com (for what it's worth), 4 of the prospects acquired this week are already slotted into the Cardinals top 10.

My concern is that they got a bunch of lottery tickets and won’t be able to develop any of them.

I didn't say we haven't developed solid players. I'm saying ALL-STAR players. The verdict is still out on Gorman, Winn, Walker, and Nootbaar, I gave them that. But the others are solid contributors, but not all-star caliber players, especially not consistently.TGantz wrote: ↑August 1 23, 6:01 pmWe have developed Walker, Winn, Gorman, Nootbar, Carlson, O'Neill, Edman, Donovan, Herrera, DeJong, Flaherty, Hicks, Hesley, good enough prospects to land Goldschmidt and Arenado, etc.
Let's not pretend like we have zero player development. Pitching is for sure thin. But most of the league would have killed for our young flame throwers out of the bullpen last year. Bullpens are volatile and ours imploded this year.
When is the last time the Cardinals developed an Acuna? Strider? Tatis? Judge? Corbin Carroll? Soto? They haven't developed a player on that level since Pujols. I guess you can say Molina, but he's a different kind of all-star, where his intangibles make him more valuable than anything else. And pitcher? forget about it.

All good players, but can we conclude that any of them are elite yet?
If you're developing guys like Goldy and Arenado, then you don't have to trade prospects for them. If you're developing guys like Scherzer or Nola, then you don't have to pay market value for guys like that in the off-season.

A different baseball ops person would’ve turned the overlapping position player talent into a competent pitching staff. The longer they wait the harder that gets.

Probably 2014. Those guys aren't the easiest to find or develop.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑August 1 23, 6:09 pmI didn't say we haven't developed solid players. I'm saying ALL-STAR players. Spending is great to supplement the guys you developed.

Not saying it's easy, but every great team has developed multiple elite players in the last decade. We have not.TGantz wrote: ↑August 1 23, 6:11 pmProbably 2014. In order to be with the elites, you're gonna have to do it.
