Again, you don't seem to like baseball very much. Would you rather watch a future Hall of Famer play out his career in St Louis, still providing reasonable production, and have 70 wins in 2023, or would you rather have a rotating cast of guys on first, get maybe 71 wins, but have a lower payroll?

Liking process more than results doesn't make you not a baseball fan. Just sayin.

I'd rather have 70 wins and some young talent added to the system to look forward to.Famous Mortimer wrote: ↑August 9 23, 12:45 pmAgain, you don't seem to like baseball very much. I love Goldy. I'll root for him no matter where he plays, because he's a great baseball player, and I like baseball.

Where did WAR God say they don't like baseball very much or give an indication that they don't?Famous Mortimer wrote: ↑August 9 23, 12:45 pmAgain, you don't seem to like baseball very much. I like baseball as much as anybody.
But this year I hate it. A lot.

You can’t just play anyone at first base because they’re on the team and aren’t great at another position.

Maybe I played “franchise mode” too much growing up?Famous Mortimer wrote: ↑August 9 23, 12:45 pmAgain, you don't seem to like baseball very much. I don’t know, I try to be realistic. There’s only so much payroll the team is willing to spend. Cards have some really exciting young players who I would like to see get more playing time. I like Goldy, but his position presents an opportunity to get a lot younger which similar production. I’m ready for the old guard to move on fully and start this youth movement in earnest. Seeing what Walker/Gorman do each night is the only thing keeping me interested in this MLB season. Their development and growth. That’s just me though.
It’s possible that Goldschmidt goes into the Hall of Fame as a Cardinal. It’s also possible that he would do that anyway even if he played for the Phillies for 18 months. He could go on to play for somebody like Toronto for two years after becoming a free agent after next season, too.
Any sort of romantic connection I have to individual players partially died with Pujols, and was fully put out to pasture with the retirement of Molina. Again, that’s just me.

I get that. the defensive position hierarchy is a real thing too. It’s likely that Gorman and Walker would be at worst serviceable 1B after coming up with average to plus grades at 3B.

At the end of the day, players are assets to the franchise I root for. That doesn't mean I don't care about their well-being, it just means I want to maximize their value to the franchise I root for, winning baseball games.
Sometimes that means players have more value in trade than they do to the stated goal above.
It reminds me of the Wedding Crashers scene where the kid tells Vince Vaughn to "make me a bicycle clown." At the end of the day, my biggest interest in you is through the Cardinals winning baseball games.
Which, in all honesty, is why I implore all players to get every dime that they can get in the game. As soon as they aren't good, most fans will want you elsewhere, and a team certainly has very little loyalty to you past what you can do for the owner.
