There's going to be a plan A of Nola, Yamamoto and Cease that will turn into Gray, Imanaga and Quintana if we're lucky.
I am bracing for more like Gray and Quintana along with Mikolas, Matz, and Thompson/Hudson/Rom.
I could live with Nola, Quintana, and a cheap Severino. At the end of the day we're getting into bidding wars with like 28 other teams that need pitching so I'm really not expecting any of us to be happy with this offseason.
Apparently when Max Scherzer got his 7/210 offer from the Nationals, he called Wainwright and told him to pass it along to the Cardinals and they don't have to match it, just be in the ballpark and he'll sign. Wainwright told the Cardinals and they never reached out to Scherzer.

I've lived through the Packers ownership/front office with Favre and Rodgers. This story being true wouldn't completely surprise me. What was he, 30 at the time?

That'd be hilarious if Wainwright was secretly a jerk and never told the Cardinals about it.
Hindsight being that the Scherzer deal was possibly the only huge FA pitcher deal that has ever worked out, we could probably find threads on this very forum from that time shocked at how big of deal it was and happy the Cardinals did not match it.
Not to mention the Cardinals at that time were in a much different place with their starting pitchers. In the first year of the Scherzer deal, the Cardinals led the league in ERa by a wide margin, won 100 games, all while their best pitcher (Wainwright) pitched 28 innings.
The problem is, the Cardinals haven’t developed jack squat for pitchers ever since.
