May and the Cardinals have a 20 million dollar mutual option; so I guess if a contending team liked him they would then have that extra year potentially.

But since everyone is talking about no baseball next season that might not entice much.

I think the Cards would and should give him a QO at that number. It’s roughly what Imanaga got for 1 year this year, and May’s been better than that. He’s roughly equivalent to what Gausman has been this year (ERA and advanced stats) and Gausman’s AAV is $22M.

They’ve got the money and if he signs then they get Dustin May for another year. Looks like they could probably use him too.

Mentioned by Goold yesterday - if May isn't traded and rejects the qualifying offer, the Cards get a compensation pick. So whatever they're offered basically has to beat whatever that pick is or I suppose beat the value of May accepting it. So that helps a little.
not really, as there is a ZERO percent chance he is given a QO

the QO for this year was 22 million, so will be higher this offseason, and May would 100% accept that....and he's not worth 22+ mil. He only got $12 this year and hasn't been great.
Also we have no idea with the new CBA if QOs will actually be a thing. If May kept that hot stretch he had going for him then he could have been a candidate to offer the QO and have him reject because he would be a candidate for a long term deal. But he's cooled down enough that I think he would jump at accepting $22M for another season.
I don’t know that they’d grandfather long contracts but I assume anything specifically related to next year would stay in place. Even if they manage to agree on something before the season starts.

The Cardinals aren’t taking a chance that they’d have to pay someone $20 plus million. They’ll just add another lottery ticket they can trade for an A ball guy at the deadline.

Yikes, that sounds like a quote from a player who doesn't exactly love his GM.
He should look at his owners then. They're the ones who decided not to spend any money to try to compete this year.

And they didn't because nobody expected this team to be competitive at all. I get it from Winn's perspective though. This is basically a wasted year of his career.
Some of us thought they would be competitive, lol!

Moot point on May anyway, as they’ll probably find a deal. But I don’t think 20-22M is a serious barrier. They’re spending at least that much money again at some point.

For Angel Arredondo.

I heard from an Angels fan on Discord that Mozeliak said Arrendondo would be in the top 10 of the Angels system. MLB Pipeline currently puts him at 27th in the Angels system. I guess Mo sees something in this kid.

I had to double check FG's list of Angels prospects in case they updated their Board already but nope, Arredondo doesn't appear in the top 36 Angels' prospects or the Rangers' top 44 prospects so...
