Thoughts on Jay Randoloph

i could never stand him in the 60's and 70's and i still can't stand him.
him and horton are a boring pair.

KSDK.......could have done better
i see their reasoning behind it,but times have change

You know what is different about Randolph, which may be the reason why people are calling him boring? He doesn't run his mouth non-stop like Horton and Carpenter and Hrabosky. He calls the game on the field. There were multiple times on Sundays game that Jay couldn't make a call, because Horton had to finish some unrelated story. Listen, if you can, to the Rolen double. The ball had already hit the ground and the fielder had picked it up, before Horton SHUT UP! It's annoying.

That's all I'll say, and I'm out of this one.

Maybe it's a Pavlovian response. You could have had Bozo the freaking Clown doing the games when I was a kid and I would have argued you to death about how great he was as an announcer.

It was Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals were on the road, and I got to watch them on TV. And some man was talking, and that man's voice will always be associated with that. And when I hear it again, I love it.

I'll have to listen a little more critically next time. Has JohnnyJay said, alot of announcers, almost the style now, is to run your mouth non stop. Jack Brickhouse was a guy that if heard today would be snubbed by the younger crowd grown up with mics in the bases and 16 bazillion pieces of information on the screen making SWOOSH sounds as they come and go. But Brickhouse was good, even if he was a Cub.

It's those moments of great excitement that I'm looking for someone with a pulse. Also, you could argue that a "boring" sport, as you put it, depends even more heavily on the announcers to keep it interesting.

I don't think there's a particular style that makes or breaks the announcer...I think it's each individual and what they bring. My knock on Joe Buck is he concentrates too much on the negative. Do something different that what he thought should have been done and he'll remind us the rest of the game. He's still probably the best we have on TV (when we have him). Dan M tries too hard. He does do his homework to some extent, however. Al is a damn tape recorder. He's got about 50 different stories and repeats them over and over throughout the year. Plus he has a real problem speaking. Jay Randolph is likable enough and isn't real critical but, Jesus, from what I've heard so far...he's taken a few steps back from his already shaky ground.

I think the reason I brought up Randolph doing golf is because he did used to do golf. Anyone else remember? I don't think he was too bad at it?

Hey hey! Randolph kind of reminded me of the type of announcer Brickhouse was. A little on the "square" side. Harry C was out drinking and eating huge piles of food while Jack and Jay were back in their hotel rooms ironing their shirts for the next day's game. Total speculation on my part but that's the feeling I got from those guys. Has nothing to do with the kind of announcers they were, just seemed like an uncle rather than a real sports guy.

I've liked what I've heard so far and I didn't think I would. I really enjoyed it when it was Shannon and Randolph over Horton and Randolph though.

I think this is why people who heard him in the 70's and remember him fondly. In those broadcasts he had Shannon with him in innings 1-3, and 7-9, with Jack Buck doing innings 4-6. Randolph was like the straight guy.

Right now (when Shannons not on) it's like listening to Bud Abbott without Costello. Not comparing Buck and Shannon to comediens, but they were the real flavor of the broadcast. Randolph was a good complement to his partners, he reacted to them. Though I never considered him a great broadcaster, I think with Horton (or pretty much anybody else) he is going be flat. Plus he is obviously struggling with getting a handle on players having been gone so long.

Just MO.
