McCain needs this to get somewhat resolved over the next 24 hours, ideally for him, would be to get this solved during the debate with him in Washington and Obama in Oxford. That's probably the only situation where he comes out ahead.

I think Obama will win, but you're jumping the gun a little. The country generally seems to be about 50/50, so I imagine it's going to be close either way.

It's looking like the bailout package might get done today. If so, will the debate tomorrow happen? Is there any real reason why the VP debate wouldn't happen as scheduled? None of this makes sense.

Both senators have been generally absent from the chambers for easily a year now. They're campaigning. This is just the way it goes.

So why did I see 2 McCain commercials this morning if the campaign is suspended?

BW--I think you are underestimating a lot of people here. I am pretty sure a significant percentage of people here voted for Bush at least once.

This board isn't full of liberals. I think most posters here could be swayed to either side with a good, logical argument.

You're the one who said it didn't matter how good a candidate was - you are only voting for one party for the rest of your life, regardless of what kind of person the candidate is.

This kind of nullifies your ability to be objective about things.

Greetings from Amsterdam!

My comment about McCain was based on the information that I have; that as far as I know has not been refuted by him or his campaign. Obama called him in the morning to talk about issuing a joint statement. He didn't call the press to call for a joint statement, but he went to McCain privately to discuss it. McCain returned the call in the afternoon, agreeing on the idea and then suggested that he was going to suspend his campaign and went on TV 5 minutes later to do so. To me it sounds like he made this move to try and gain a political advantage. To me, that sounds like a Karl Rove or James Carville move, not a John McCain move. But maybe I just don't know him as well as I thought I did.

I'm thinking that trying to politicize this while pretending to do the opposite will backfire. But what do I know? I thought choosing Palin would be disastrous but it has been far from that. It still might be a problem for him in the aggregate (especially if she continues to hide from the press), but in my view it was a totally poor choice from day 1 and a bad reflection on McCain's judgment. But about half the people didn't see it that way at all.

In the last 10 days, we have received an unusually high volume of voter registration applications," state Division of Elections Director Donald Palmer wrote in an e-mail to Florida's 67 election supervisors Wednesday.

Despite hiring an extra 25 staffers, Palmer wrote, the agency can't handle the volume -- it received 25,000 new registrations in one day this week -- and "will need to forward many of these applications to the counties of registrants to ensure they are timely processed."
The state's voter rolls have swelled by more than 476,000, to 10.74 million voters, since the start of the year. More than 89,000 new registrations were processed in August alone, and registered Democrats now exceed Republicans by 500,000 -- 4.45 million compared with 3.95 million.
