Apparently, the first debate had more impact than some thought it would. I couldn't believe it when I heard people calling it a tie or saying that nothing would change because of it. I had to wonder if they were watching the same debate as me.
Either that or the idiocy of Palin is affecting the numbers. It's widely believed that the VPs don't typically have much impact on the outcome of the election but I wonder if McCain's picking her is now more widely being viewed as poor judgment on his part.

Polling right now is being affected by the financial crisis. Palin and the debate is small potatoes. I don't know how or why, but the banking crisis is helping Obama right now.

That's the Clinton effect, Reagan was able to capture the economic vote in the 80s then Bush I ruined it, Clinton takes office and is credited with rebounds in the economy, Bush takes office and during his tenure and it's obvious the last 16 years have shifted the public's views as far as who would be better in an economic crisis while the GOP still has security and cultural issues as their strongpoint.

You don't know why the polls are favoring Obama recently but you're certain that my ideas are wrong.

From what I heard, a lot of Obama supporters felt he didn't do that well. I thought it was a toss-up. McCain came off condescending and annoyed at times, but overall I thought he did pretty well. He also looked sharper than I've seen him in a while.
I think it's the economy, then Palin, then maybe the debate but I don't think it had much effect at all.

I think Palin also is having a sizeable effect. As people get to know her, I think people see the move was a cheap parlor trick. "McCain First" is what I think many are seeing in that move. I have no doubt that without the economic news Obama would have pulled out to a small but real lead.
