And what did we spend those checks on? What were they designed to be spent on? Were they just designed to be spent to get that money into the ecconomy or were they designed to be spent on paying down debt to help you get ahead?

I find all of this very ironic considering that the huge bailout that just happened took money away from pretty much everybody- not just the $250k and over crowd- and was aimed at "bailing out" a bunch of Wall Street execs. It was the exact opposite scenario that you describe.
Ya and that was a big kick in the balls to most people if you ask me.
yeah and it seems your less worried about the corporate welfare and more worried about the relatively few people that scam a few extra food stamps or play the disability game. I'm willing to bet that the former costs us more than the latter.
i assure you im not less worried about the corporate welfare, im just pissed off at what i perceive as the general direction of our country right now.

The federal government spends over 50% of the budget on defense/military.

That is flat out ridiculous.

I'll have the full poll report out whenever Silver posts them over at the website, but

Mississippi(R2000) - Obama 40, McCain 50
Texas(R2000) - Obama 40, McCain 52

It's down to 10 in Mississippi and 12 in Texas? That's big. McCain will still take Mississippi, but Texas I feel is going to come down to single digits by election day.

Rumor has it Powell will endorse Sunday.

Why couldn't he have run? Not a single one of the candidates that I wanted to run while Bush was in office actually ran and I think almost all of them would have been better choices than anything that we had in the Republican primaries (except Huckabee).

Scratch that. 4 years ago I thought Guiliani would have been a great candidate.

Guys and gals that I wanted to run early after Bush (going back 4-8 years):

* Powell
* Ridge
* Guiliani
* Rice (VP candidate)

It looks more like Powell will endorse Obama than McCain.

I don't think Powell or Guiliani do well with the Republican base. Mostly on social issues. I think Powell is too moderate for primary voters.

I would strongly consider voting for Powell in a general election. Running mate would be a factor.

That was the speculation I heard this morning as well. As one put it, Powell would've come out a long time ago if it was McCain.

Guiliani i agree with, which is why he didn't do well in the primaries or get strong consideration for VP.

Powell, on the other hand, was so highly regarded as a statesman and apolitical figure that I think he would have easily transcended the typical base issues (even in a primary), much like Obama has.
