Audience members escorted out of Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., campaign event in Cedar Falls questioned why they were asked to leave Sunday’s rally even though they were not protesting.
David Zarifis, director of public safety for the University of Northern Iowa, said McCain staffers requested UNI police assist in escorting out “about four or five” people from the rally prior to McCain’s speech [...]
“When I started talking to them, it kind of became clear that they were kind of just telling people to leave that they thought maybe would be disruptive, but based on what? Based on how they looked,” Elborno said. “It was pretty much all young people, the college demographic.”
Elborno said even McCain supporters were among those being asked to leave.
“I saw a couple that had been escorted out and they were confused as well, and the girl was crying, so I said ‘Why are you crying? and she said ‘I already voted for McCain, I’m a Republican, and they said we had to leave because we didn’t look right,’” Elborno said. “They were handpicking these people and they had nothing to go off of, besides the way the people looked.”

Bill Kristol is just worn out. He was on the Daily Show tonight and has run out of ways to defend McPalin. When Jon Stewart told him that Palin engaged in socialism when she cut a check to Alaskan citizens for their collective ownership of oil, he called it conservative economics. Stewart was about to flip and Kristol started laughing like "[expletive], I'm not getting away with that."

DENVER — Tens of thousands of Coloradans who had been removed from the state’s voter rolls will be allowed to vote in next week’s election and given extra protections so their ballots are counted, under an agreement reached late Wednesday in federal court here.
The voters’ names had been removed by Mike Coffman, the Colorado secretary of state, who said he did so because the voters had moved out of state or were listed more than once on the rolls. But Mr. Coffman was sued by a coalition of voting rights and other groups who said such purges were generally prohibited by federal law within 90 days of an election.

It still doesn't make sense in the context of the original post if I understand it correctly. The guy basically said he isn't going to do anything at all for the next 4-8 years, and that's without any knowledge of what the subsequent president's tax stance would be. He's just going to depreciate his assets for the forseeable future while not earning any money on those assets. There isn't really any scenario where he should just forego making any money at all for the next say 8 years and have that preferable to paying somewhat more tax on his net income. About the only thing I can think of is that he's made plenty of money and the investments are very high risk such that the potential payoff under the new tax rates would make it a bad investment but I don't get that impression.Leroy wrote:Running on a lot of assumptions here, but maybe here is what the guy is thinking.
(I haven't done taxes for awhile, so I am using completely arbitrary numbers).
Let's say that a tax bracket breaks at the top from 30% to 35%. When I did business / farm returns, you would have a guy that was well into the higher bracket. We would maximize depreciation to get him into the lower bracket, but only barely. That way he could maximize his 30% income and not make any 35%, making it better next year (more income available before the high bracket kicked in). Maybe not gaining money, but minimizing the tax bite, and deferring it into the future. It is kind of a gain. But you also have to look at the net gain/loss and how long it can be deferred.
This probably only makes sense to me, but you asked.

Interesting story from USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/e ... sted_N.htmMontana gunsmith Dan Cooper has been ousted as chief executive of the rifle company that bears his name after pressure from gun owners who are angry that he is supporting Democrat Barack Obama.
