I saw Rachel Getting Married over the weekend. It was alright and that's a shame because it could've been really good.

First, anne hatheway is really great as the cracked out sister who just got out of rehab and always tries to make everything about her and her f'd up life. You'll hate her, you'll like her, but you'll definitely be convinced by her - it's a solid performance.

However, the rest of the movie is just fairly plot free. It's shot on a handheld, so you get that realistic yet motion sickness-inducing effect. Not much really happens. Everyone attending the wedding plays multiple musical instruments, and there's strange, unexplained cultural appropriation going on at every moment. "Oh, now some brazillian samba dancers are going to show up to perform! oh, now it turns out one family member is a jamaican raggae singer! let's all wear sari's for no reason!"

the biggest complaint though, without giving too much away, is that there's a sudden and unexplained reconciliation that happens near the end, that makes us realize The Great Importance of Family. It's very calculated.

anyway, i think it's barely still showing in theatres so there's not much chance you guys will be seeing it. Just needed to vent.

Looking forward to it myself. I haven't been interested in much of Demme's work since Philadelphia.

i don't think they're washed up.. i just think they keep making really bad choices..

scorsese is allegedly in the works to make a new one with deniro.. if that's true..
i bet you we see the old awesome bobby d.

De Niro's been sleepwalking for years, I don't doubt he has ability still but he hasn't cared about giving a serious performance in the longest time. I would love for him to show me up on that one though, especially in a Scorsese movie.

I don't think Pacino deserves to be lumped in with him, he still gives good performances and even great ones here and there (The Merchant of Venice, Angels in America, etc.). Even some of the performances targeted as over-the-top - Heat, for example - really aren't given the characters.

At some point I figure I'd get tired of Scorsese mob movies but it has yet to happen. He is my favorite director so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Just got back from The Wrestler. I liked it, but I don't know quite what to make of it. It isn't that I don't "get" it because it's incredibly straight forward, just that I'm not sure how it makes me feel (other than my incredible love of Marisa Tomei rages on). It's one of those movies that takes a while to sink in, I think. It's almost too upfront, and completely unsentimental.

In a way, I had the same reaction to Rachel Getting Married, which I also liked a lot, or should say really wanted to like a lot. All the elements are there but some how I could never quite fall for the movie. I'm starting to think that this is deliberate. Neither one of those movies tries to charm you, imo, and neither one is very philosophical. They just sort of exist and don't beg for your interpretation as a viewer.

I think I'm going to need to see both again. Incidentally, Rourke is great. Tomei needs more screen time. You know, just because.
