YEah, but think about the Bud Smith trade for Rolen and Kennedy for Edmonds. Not that I don't understand what you're saying, but that type of thinking would have prevented those trades from going down.
I think Holliday makes this team a playoff team easily with a decent WS shot.
Our rotation is very good right now. 4 deep I would argue one of the best in baseball. 3 deep, not as good, but still well above average.
I think everybody was suspicious that Bud Smith was damaged goods when that deal was made.
Baseball is much different than it was not too long ago. You can't trade your crap for a good ball player because teams know they can get compensation draft picks if they just offer them arbitration and let them walk. Add into it the current economics of the sport and prospects are much more highly valuable than they were then.

Good points. All great trades from the Cards perspective. There was an ESPN article this week about the biggest trades of the last 10 years. All of the trades that for Stars for prospects that turned badly for the team getting the Star, involved trading away young top pitching prospects. It seems hitting prospects, you can generally tell what you're getting.
Wallace will probably have to play 1st, and will his power come around?
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark debunks five myths about the trade deadline. This year's deadline will be different than in years past, since more players will clear waivers, allowing teams to deal until the end of August. Matt Holliday, Jarrod Washburn and Jack Wilson are all "likely to zip through waivers" next month

Every day Billy Beane waits to trade Holliday, the more his value drops and the more paychecks he gets from the A's. If he can get the deal he wants now, he'll be stupid to wait until next month.

What is the advantage in waiting for them to clear waivers?
Every day you wait is another day of missed production, as far as I'm concerned. If you're going to do it, do it yesterday and let's get this party started.
I'm confused. Wasn't it in the Halladay thread that they didn't want to trade Wallace?
Is Holliday going to be that more an impact than Halladay? I would think a known commodity of a pitcher would be better (in this market) than a known hitter. I've been sporadic reading the last few days, is there something in the trade threads I missed?

Holliday=Wallace<Halladay?
It's all just rumors, the latest rumor about Halladay was the the Cards refuse to give up Rasmus or Wainwright.
