I don't see how the fact that the Cards and Cubs play each other changes that number. If the Cubs beat the Cards, it goes down 0. If the Cards beat the Cubs, it goes down 2.

The magic number is 44.
It's not Cubs vs Cards that impacts the number, but the fact that your competition plays each other. Therefore Cubs vs Rockies (wild card) has an impact.

edit - this explains it better:

The 42 number took into account the wild card.

not to be a downer.. but i just can't think like this..
Who do you think the Cards will play on Sunday night baseball to start the season next year?
you all make fun.. but like i said.. i don't want to be here if, God forbid, we don't win
the Central
haha, you're a good sport. I guess as a Cardinal fan, life is good right now. For me, talking about magic numbers, possible playoff opponents, etc. just adds to the expreience of being in first place. It's been 3 years since we felt this way. Enjoy the moment!

Per CT - No TLR managed team has ever missed the playoffs if leading by 4.5 games.

ahh, wild card. I see.

As a Cards fan, I don't pay much attention to the wild card. The team has never actually *won* the wild card (even though they were seeded as so in 2001).

Is she the poster child for, "Sell Out"?

Boy has she changed. She used to be kind of good back then.

haha I saw this, awesome. Is it leading the division by 4.5 games at any point in the season or in August/September?
