I mentioned this in the other thread but TLR said he talked to Holliday yesterday to tell him about Mark and TLR said Matt was very excited about it. He said that it won't be a deciding factor, that how much money the Cardinals can offer will be the deciding factor, but that Matt was still very excited about Mark coming back.

Maybe this is addressed in the other thread, but if McGwire will be the hitting coach, and since Holliday has worked with him during past off seasons, does that relationship help the team's chances in re-signing Holliday?

I think it adds about a .0001% chance. He's either going to sign, or he's going to take $50m more from someone else. No amount of sentimentality will change that.

I maintain the view that the Yankees are the only team that can afford to outbid us by a significant amount.

So, unless the Yankees are involved or ownership is really stingy, perhaps McGwire's presence will have more than a .0001% impact.

I think you might be right.

The Mets have $92M committed to 8 players in 2010, and $87M committed to 7 in 2011. Wow.

The Angels have $68M committed to 8 players in 2010, and $54M to 5 in 2011. Lackey, Abreu and Vlad are all entering FA. Weaver, Saunders, Kendrick, Morales, and Aybar are all arb-eligible within the next 2 years.

The Giants have $51M committed to 5 players in 2010. The Zito-Rowand monster will haunt them for a few more years. Lincecum, Brian Wilson,and Matt Cain are arb-eligible in 2011.

I think the Braves could be a darkhorse in the Holliday sweepstakes. Their OF lacks punch and they have the payroll to do a long-term deal with him.

I hadn't considered the Braves as a potential suitor, but that makes sense. Anderson to Holliday would be a big upgrade. Holliday, McLouth, Diaz and Church would make for a good group of outfielders.

Well, OK, I guess both the Yankees and the Red Sox could significantly outbid us. Boston might be willing to offer Holliday the kind of deal they gave Manny at the beginning of this decade ($160 million over 8 years).
