According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Yankees would like to re-sign Johnny Damon to a two-year contract.

Damon's agent Scott Boras is pushing for a four-year deal, but it's doubtful he'll find that this winter. Damon had a fantastic 2009 season, finishing with a .282/.365/.489 batting line, 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 107 runs scored. But he just turned 36 years old and is an awful defender. If the Yanks let him walk, the likelihood of them re-signing Hideki Matsui no doubt increases.

Angels owner Arte Moreno indicated Thursday that the Angels will pursue free agent outfielder Jason Bay this winter.

Moreno told local media members that he's intrigued by Bay's "great bat and great makeup." The 31-year-old should come at a cheaper price than Matt Holliday and seems like a fine fit in Anaheim, where a spot has opened via the expected departure of Vladimir Guerrero. Bay hit .267/.384/.537 in 2009 with 36 home runs, 119 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 531 at-bats.

Exactly. Damon or Matsui could be the DH and Holliday could be their left fielder. If they re-sign both Damon and Matsui, they wouldn't have room for Holliday.

Public comments from owners and/or GM's are quite credible. I'd bet that at least one of these owners is using this as a very diplomatic way to tell Boras to take a flying leap..

Stark and Buster are usually pretty good on this stuff.

I'm still not sure the Mets are smart enough to make a play here.

My nightmare scenario is that the new Cub ownership might have the good sense to dust off the tactic that landed Andre Dawson and slide a signed contract across the table and allow Holliday/Boras to fill in the amount and the term.

Yeah, but baseball contracts are guaranteed. They'd still have to pay him.

At best, they could put him on waivers, and hope somebody assumes his contract (without having to give up anything). But in reality, no one will do that.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have expressed interest in four of Scott Boras' clients -- Matt Holliday, Mike Gonzalez, Rick Ankiel and Adrian Beltre.
The Red Sox are looking at Holliday as a more expensive alternative should they fail to re-sign Jason Bay. Gonzalez, a left-hander, could presumably take the role of Billy Wagner if he signs as a closer elsewhere. Ankiel is a surprising name, but since they just acquired Jeremy Hermida, also a left-handed outfielder, it's hard to see a fit. Lastly, Beltre would only make sense if the Red Sox find a suitor for Mike Lowell, who has one year and $12 million left on his contract. It's important to understand that this is just the first day of free-agency, so look for the Red Sox to be linked to most, or all, of the major free agents.

I actually have confidence that we'll resign Holliday. It looks like Boston is going harder after Bay, even getting their previous offer turned down, the Angels have no interest, The Mets with payroll restrictions and need other free agents, and the Yankees are reportedly not interested, but never count the Yankees out. If none of those teams take him then IMO he's all ours. I'm pretty sure we could outbid anyone if all of those teams opted out. The biggest threat would be Atlanta but their not a huge market. So even with Holliday on open market I think we'll get him back and the evil dictator of free agency and all around money pig will have no other choice but to send Holliday to St. Louis.
