It's an intriguing idea if the Sox were to pick up at least $5M. Otherwise I think it becomes pretty hard to afford Holliday, Smoltz, a RH CF, another starter, and a few other pieces. He's a known quantity, and unlike Beltre or DeRosa, would not require a multi-year commitment.

So he's either going to get 13 million a year for 3 years or 20 millions a year for 6 years. Predictions are useless.

Mel Antonen...

Figgins 3/31
Bay 3/36
Pineiro 3/40
Holliday 3/40
Lackey 3/57

Don't get me wrong, I hope he's right, but unfortunately an awful lot of people have to be retarded for that to happen.

I guess it's a plausible in a recession economy where one can buy the Silverdome for $583 K. But the kicker for me is seeing Pinata and Holliday get the same projected deal. That just fails the sniff test.

I disagree that those predictions are completely useless. They're marginally entertaining. I don't know who any of those guys are but for one to suggest he'd sign for 3/40 is laughable. It needed to be pointed out. Goodbye credibility, whoever you are (if you had any to begin with).

Is it assumed that we don't sign Pineiro? I'm not saying that we should, but have the Cardinals ruled it out?

I would really like Lowell. I made a post not to long ago about why I think we should go after him. I've heard he's pretty bad defensively but he crushes lefties with an .860 OPS against them. He's getting old but at least he doesn't have a nagging wrist injury that Derosa had all year. My fear is that Boston would make us pay for him. They are looking to get rid of Lowell for his bad contract.

He may not have the nagging wrist injury that DeRosa had, but he does have a surgically repaired hip.

I don't think they've ruled out any of their FA's up to this point.
