Hell, if I'm the Giants, I try to trade Sanchez + for Cabrera, AND sign Holliday. In that park, they can get by with decent pitching, but adding real, elite level hitters would do wonders for their chances overall.

I know fans fall for that...but there is no salary cap in baseball. They can spend the money if they really want to.

Hell, adding Cabrera and Holliday, costs what, $40 million? That puts them at $91 million...surely San Fran can afford $100 million payroll, even with the stadium payments.

It's not a matter of falling for something. If ownership refuses to spend more than X dollars, there isn't anything you can do but hope they spend those dollars wisely.

"Obviously I've never lived in some of the big cities on the East Coast, but at the same time, I've spent some time there, and [with] my dad being from Pennsylvania, I have some experience on the East Coast." Holliday even dropped Atlanta in the conversation while mentioning that his brother once lived there. He's saying all the right things as the top prize in the free agent market.

I still maintain that he's just trying to get as much as he can out of the Cardinals, but if the Yankees (or whoever) offers him significantly more than the Cardinals are willing to, then yeah, he'll be gone. Significantly being the key word.

Every line the guy says buys him the potential for hundreds of thousands of dollars. If he said he wanted to re-sign with us since August, he'd have gotten, what, 15 million a year? If he keeps courting each big-spender team, he could possibly make way more than that. We all have an inherent bias thinking that St Louis is God's Garden to play in, but let's be realistic. The guy played here for three months, I'm sure he loved the cheers. But in the end, he'll probably take 7/135 from the Red Sox over 6/110 from us. Jeez, guys, I'd take another 25 mil to play in a city more likely too boo me. Hell, I'd take a few hundred bucks for that.

I absolutely want the Cards to sign Matt Holliday. I just don't think it'll happen. I'm already hoping our draft picks pan out for us, through trades in a few years or fruition to our own staff.
