I had a read a rumor somewhere that Matsui would sign for one year if it meant getting a chance to play LF.

matsui in left is a non starter

he has played 22 games in the field the last two years

played 112 in 2007
36 in 2006

in 2003-5 he played mostly full years in the OF

so since 2006 he has played in total those 4 years what he played in the OF in any year from 2003-5

he has knee issues and seems pretty clearly to be declining.

Jason Bay's agent Joe Urbon told Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com that his client will not wait for Matt Holliday to sign in order to gauge his own value.
"Our decision will be based on the market movement for Jason," said Urbon. "When the 'right' deal presents itself, we plan on responding accordingly independent of other signings or imminent signings." Edes writes that according to a club source, Bay -- not Holliday -- remains Boston's top target for left field. Not surprisingly, Bay -- a Type A free agent -- was offered arbitration by the Red Sox on Tuesday. Should he sign elsewhere, he will cost his new team draft pick compensation.

Holliday is drawing interest from all of baseball's biggest spenders this offseason, but he seemed to enjoy his time in St. Louis and would probably be comfortable with a return. After all, the 29-year-old hit .353/.419/.604 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI once he joined the Birds.

A comment like that from The Skipper should carry a lot of weight with the more astute observers of this situation.

The Red Sox need a left fielder and the best free agent available fills that need. That's about all you need to say. We basically have to match whatever they're willing to pay.

I'm not sure "match" gets it done in this situation. If I'm a right handed hitting left fielder, there is no place I'd rather play than in Boston.
