What resources are available, Phin? What was the Cardinals margin last year, compared to other organizations?

Yeah, I agree with that. It's too much.Socnorb11 wrote:But when you're negotiating among professionals, you would think you would try to be a little more professional, rather than stating publicly that your counterpart doesn't know how to do his job.
I don't have a problem with Boras getting his clients money, I just don't care for the way he does it sometimes. Talking players up in glorified terms is over the top, but understandable. I don't mind the stuff about pairing Holliday with Pujols, and trying to sell that. But criticizing the way the business is run isn't his job. I wouldn't mind seeing that from Bernie or Strauss.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the Cardinals do get more of this stuff from him and that's likely due to our payroll. It seems like he just talks to the Yankees, whereas with us there's more of this kind of stuff. I think it's due to our payroll. We have more than most, but not so much that it's not an issue. Of course, maybe I just don't read enough about his dealing with other teams.

His job, pure and simple, is to get the most money as possible for his clients. How he chooses to do that is his business. If this gets an extra mil/year for Holliday (and therefore 100K for himself), I would say that criticizing the Cardinals is his job.ghostrunner wrote:Yeah, I agree with that. I understand people don't like it, but it's a free country and there are many agents available. Yet you'll have a tough time convincing anyone that Boras isn't the best.

Criticizing the way the Cardinals do business isn't going to get his client even one more penny. If anything, he may be offending enough organizations that he's actually beginning to hurt his clients instead. For instance, I've heard rumors that the Angels aren't even willing to negoatiate with him on Holliday, because of how poorly he handled their negotiations with Teixeira last year. I can't confirm that, but it's certainly possible.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:His job, pure and simple, is to get the most money as possible for his clients. How he chooses to do that is his business. Yes, Boras is the best at what he does. That doesn't mean he's perfect, and it doesn't mean that he should get a free pass to say whatever he pleases.

So DeWitt's going to be shamed into spending more? No way that's the case. I'd assume if anything, it makes them less likely to deal with him.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote: His job, pure and simple, is to get the most money as possible for his clients. Feel free to criticize, but he's following his own MO. His MO is the best. I understand people dont' like it, but you can't argue with his results. He may/may not get one more penny from the Cardinals because of it. If not, more power to the FO, but it's not like the Cardinals are going to decrease their offer bc of Boras...so it hurts nothing.
And, soc, front offices will stop dealing with Boras when he stops handling the best players. As of now, he has many a good ones b/c, as stated, he's the best.

His profile allows him to take a lot of the blows for his clients. This isn't the kind of forum where we will call out a player for taking more money from another competitive team. But there are plenty of fans who think that way, and at times it's fairly difficult to blame them.
Like Rush Limbaugh, he disgusts me, but also like Rush, the truth is when we talk about him he is winning in some way.

Concerning your first statement, I don't think that criticizing the way owners and GM's run their teams has been his "MO". I'm not aware that he's criticized other teams in that way, are you?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Feel free to criticize, but he's following his own MO. His MO is the best. Concerning your last statement - it's all speculation. I believe it though (Angels not wanting to deal for Holliday because of Boras).

Re: Update: The Matt Holliday Off-Season Thread
I'd be as embarrassed as hell to have Boras as my agent!! I don't care that he get's the "most money" for his clients. Vast vast vast majority of people hate him & his 'greed' because of it. I'm not sorry to say that playing for 8.5Mil or 9.5Mil is going to make one frickin' bit of difference. When you have that much money, why another Mil?? I could probably manage to get "by" very well without trying to get the biggest frickin' contract ever!
Of course if the east coast banks didn't open their checkbooks all of the time, we probably wouldn't be thinking how bad he is.
I really hate the way that mlb contracts are negotiated!
