I won't be surprised if Bay doesn't get that 5th year from anyone. He shouldn't even be getting offers of 4/60. Maybe this is too conspiratorial, but I wonder if teams and agents ever make agreements like this:

Team: "We don't want your player back next year, but we appreciate what he did here and don't want to hurt his chances of getting a great offer from another club."
Agent: "OK. Make us an offer of X amount over Y years, we'll decline it and we'll let the press know that other clubs have made more interesting offers."
Team: "Deal."

The Mariners would also like to retain third baseman Adrian Beltre or sign a front-line starting pitcher, like John Lackey.

If they retain Beltre, are they going to make Lopez their SS and put Figgins at 2B?

our organization has handed out many no-trade clause's over the years. hell, didn't we even give Lohse a no-trade clause?

Yep. And Rolen too. Not sure if Jimmy Ballgame's original contract had one or not, but after he became a 10/5 player he automatically got no-trade protection. Pujols contract doesn't have it, but he'll have full no-trade protection after next year as he'll be a 10/5 player as well.

IIRC, before he became a 10/5 guy he could submit a list each year of a certain number of teams he would not accept a trade to.

Jason Bay turned down the latest contract offer from the Boston Red Sox and was prepared to "move on", agent Joe Urbon confirmed to ESPNBoston.com on Saturday.

The Red Sox are also looking at free-agent left-fielder Matt Holliday. But agent Scott Boras is still trying to get Holliday as grand a score as Mark Teixeira got last winter, so serious negotiating has not begun.

I loved this line, "We don't agree with their evaluation of the player." He is already getting offered more than he deserves.
