I doubt if they can afford Cliff Lee AND Matt Holliday.

Cliff Lee only costs $8M in 2010. Basically, the money they're spending on him replaces the money they spent on Erik Bedard.

I'm not sure if they can afford Holliday or not but Cliff Lee won't be what prohibits it from happening.

Isn't Cliff Lee looking for a $20 mil per year extension? I guess I just assumed that the Mariners wouldn't have traded the prospects for him if they didn't plan to pay him.

He is. And I'm sure they'd love to extend him, but they're certainly not obligated to do so. After all, it's like the A's deal for Holliday last off-season. Worst case scenario, the M's are out of it in July and they flip Lee for a boatload of prospects, or they fail to make the playoffs and take the draft picks. If you can have Holliday for several years, plus Lee for that first year AND the draft picks after that, that's not a bad scenario to have.

True. But they probably only need to sign 1 (or maybe 2) more high-priced players. Beltre and Bay, perhaps. Maybe Holliday and DeRosa.

The Angels are hurting, while the Mariners are putting themselves in position to contend.

No, it's not. Like I said, I just assumed that Cliff Lee would be their first priority. They just signed Jack Wilson and Chone Figgins, and re-signed Ken Griffey. Holliday would certainly be another major splash for them.
