The Browns were named the Browns because they stole the name from the Cardinals. They started in Milwaukee as the Brewers in 1901, then moved the team to St. Louis in 1902. The St. Louis NL team (now the Cards) had started as the Browns, so there was some name recognition (they won the old AA 4 years straight) and the Milwaukee team just took it since it had been dropped. A beer baron by the name of Van der Ahe owned NL team and ran into some financial difficulties and he took the team down with him. The team was sold in auction in 1899 in pretty bad shape, renamed to the Perfectos. That lasted a year, and with the team really desperate they went to the name Cardinals because of the colors - the red and yellow were considered pretty flamboyant at the time. They were Astros of the 1970's back then.

Of course now the Browns are today's Baltimore Orioles.

So more than you wanted to know probably, but the Cardinals to my knowledge were not named after their socks, but the bird itself.

You were hoping for some anti-Reformation angle, weren't you?
