I don't think it's as simple as "I'll just fire him" for these guys. Some guys are going to be in control about it and some are going to be pushed around by him. The fact that they go along with what he wants and doesn't fire them doesn't necessarily mean the player is getting what he wanted most.
Of course he's going to try to steer them where he will make the most money. He'd be stupid to not try to do that.
If these grown men let the agent they hired push them around enough to sign a deal somewhere they don't want to be, then they deserve it. At the end of the day, it's the player that signs the contract, not the agent.

This is what I was thinking. I don't recall Benes firing Boras for this. He should have. Benes wanted to be here all along.
Supposedly the family was very upset with Boras for screwing up the negotiations and costing Andy some $12 million and wanted Andy to fire Boras - but he never did, as far as I know. This came out on another forum from someone who was friends with Adam Benes, who was pitching for the Cards at AA Little Rock that particular year.

Gee, I remember when Dimag, Ted, and Stan broke the $100,000 barrier.
That said, today is today- and I think the Cardinals look at this deal as though they were buying an insurance policy. Nothing else.
They need his bat, plus some others, to be a larger offensive lineup. If signed, we are on our way. Making a play for Matt also tells Albert that they are serious about winning. It might keep AP from becoming a Bonds type- being walked all the time and having to hit nothing but bad pitches in frustration. Making an effort to sign him tells the fans. all three and a half million of them, that it is okay to keep coming to the ball yard. Heaven knows we tried, folks. That insures ticket sales continuing. It's a win, win for the FO either way.
If they do not get Matt, they will have to get a clone. I do not think they believe Ras can fill that spot yet. Luddy, not so much either. DeRosa, I doubt it. Glaus, please. So, if they want to have a chance against the elite teams out there today, they must crank it up, or at least give the impression that they did.
The Penny move made sense to me, and if he does quite well, the thinking may be that if we can keep the other guys from scoring on us- we may not have to score so many runs ourselves. We could have a very formitable pitching staff next year, if things break well for us.
I think things are falling into place that will make next year a very interesting one for the team. Keep the faith.

An official with knowledge of the club's thinking says there's "not a chance" the Yankees will bid on free agent outfielders Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.
The Yankees, of course, can never be counted out completely, but this is as close to a confirmation as we'll get. Markets for both players figure to be limited at this point, as only a select few can afford the $100+ million it will take to sign Holliday, and the great majority of clubs are hesitant to go beyond four years for Bay, citing concerns that he'll be nothing more than a designated hitter-type at the end of a long-term deal.

That's good news, just like that news we got about there being no chance Burnett would go to Toronto.

What? I don't remember us getting that news at all. I remember both Toronto and St. Louis vying for Burnett over a period of time...

When this is all over we not only will know which team Holliday plays for next season, but also who is the better reporter, Joe Strauss or Buster Olney.
