Yes. This precisely. I'm just happy to hear a human album with some semblance of melody and song structure again.stlouie_lipp wrote:I can see that, and maybe my love of it is partially due to how much I hated TKOL, but I really like this one.Michael wrote:The album is a little too "hauntingly beautiful" for my tastes but it's not a bad album to have on while I'm working. I can see it growing on me.

The Minnesota Public Radio rock station (89.3, The Current) recently had a thing where people were asked to submit their list of top 10 essential albums. From those lists, they compiled the 893 essential albums and played 1 song from each album over the past week and a half (between 8am and 7 pm) during the member drive that ended this evening. Here is the top 10
1. Nirvana - Nevermind
2. The Clash - London Calling
3. Beatles - Abbey Road
4. Prince - Purple Rain (voting stopped before he died)
5. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
6. Radiohead - OK Computer
7. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
8. Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
9. Beatles - White Album
10. U2 - Joshua Tree

Chance the Rapper is transcending/justifying the hype.

I am loving Coloring Book. I'm a very surface/superficial hip hop fan, so I'm not one of those people that knows things, but his momentum has been building the last few years and it seems like he's having his moment.

Man, I wish I still cared about rap. Even though I'm much older and generally wiser about the media I consume, I doubt I'll ever know as much about any one area of art as I did about rap when I was 13-17 years old. It was the perfect combination of being young enough to feel continually excited by the discovery of new music, and free enough of responsibility to endlessly consume it.
I devoured everything from Boogie Down Productions, Kool Moe Dee, Afrika Bambataa, Eric B. and Rakim, to the early 90s Native Tongues stuff, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, De La Soul, Tribe, Wu-Tang, Fugees & Lauryn Hill, Big L, everything associated with Boot Camp Clik (Black Moon, Heltah Skeltah, Smif-N-Wessun), all the Death Row/west coast gangsta rap including lesser-heralded stuff like Compton's Most Wanted, anything Premier touched (Jeru the Damaja especially), underground/indie stuff like early DOOM, Deltron/Del the Funkee Homosapien, anything Kool Keith touched, offbeat stuff like K-Os or X Clan, Cannibal Ox, J-Live, 7L & Esoteric, Eyedea & Abilities, Aceyalone, Saafir, Blackalicious, Little Brother, instrumental stuff like DJ Shadow, DJ QBert, DJ Spooky, not to mention a good three-dozen Madlib albums, basically all the stuff coming out of Def Jux and Stones Throw, obvious stuff like Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, OutKast ([expletive] I still miss them)...on and on.
I think the last time I was actually current on rap music was 2004. Now it's just, like, the new Kanye and Kendrick Lamar albums for me, plus the occasional legacy act.

Hip Hop is really incredible right now--and this from a guy who effing hates Drake, who may be the biggest guy right now. People like Chance and Rocky and Kendrick and of course Kanye. Man there's some great, challenging, super creative [expletive] out there.
I've not heard the new one yet. But I've listened to this song 600 times in the last month:

This is ridiculous, only the thing the father of a little kid would do, but I teared up a little watching Chance on SNL. That was breathtaking.

Yeah, Big Boi's stuff is great.
Thanks for the list TGF. I'll check those out, I've been on a new music kick lately so I may as well ride it out.
