Trade Goldschmidt. I hate to say it, but it's the only deadline move they could make to really improve this team (near term and in the future) without just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

If you trade for pitching and give up the likes of Gorman/Donovan/Nootbaar, you're just opening a different leaky hole in the hull of your sinking ship. If you can get good pitching back in return for Goldy, you aren't giving up on the future, and you can move Walker to first. The WAR you are giving up with losing Goldy would be replaced with the pitching, and Walker not being in the outfield.

This is sad but makes a hell of a lot of sense. I'll get the shotgun, you take Goldy around back.

Being a bit older than most here, I have memories of several Cardinal organizational collapses.

I would like to see the current management group make some sound decisions regarding changing course.

I also fear they might not be capable of that.

Watched him in the big leagues. If you’re gonna be a DH type you have to absolutely mash. You can’t be a 15-20 home run guy. No one is trading for that. Dime a dozen.

Him pitching well down the stretch in order for us to fetch something for him at the deadline would be the greatest parting gift he could give us considering he's been pretty much either injured or ineffective for the last 4 years.

It's not Contreras, the defense completely fell apart. Take 40 runs off the pitcher's ERA and they're league average or a little better. There is some decline there as well. No good Helsley, Waino is 112 years old, but it's mostly the defense.

Going from O'Neill to Walker and Burly is like 20 runs right there and you can do something similar at every position. Even Arenado has been a downgrade from himself. The good defenders are out of position. It's a [expletive] show that exposes mediocre pitchers who don't miss a ton of bats.

That’s a bingo. Of course that defensive reduction also includes Contreras, but the Cardinals belief you can just stick butchers out there at most positions with a pitch-to-contact staff is one of many baffling moves by the club this year.

I think yadi absolutely made pitchers better.

But even yadi wouldn’t be able to fix waino this year. And I doubt Libby and matz would be that much better either.
