Olney heard the Red Sox would be interested in signing Matt Holliday at less than the current Cardinals offer. Here's the question: what exactly did the Cardinals offer to Holliday in guaranteed money and years? $15-16MM a year for up to eight years is pretty vague. Is it just a five-year offer, as Olney suggested a few days ago?
Could it be possible that the Cardinals actually outbid the Red Sox?
Those [expletive] cheap-skate Red Sox.

It could also mean Boras is selling the contract as eight years even though it's not guaranteed.

I typically don't really agree with much of what Olney says. And I don't agree with/believe him here. Though, I also agree with Michael. It lends credence to typical Scott Boras hoopla.

I am already sick of this dragging out as long as it has ... and I don't see an end for at least another month.

Is it a good thing to outbid the Sox? I wouldn't think so.

It really depends. I think Hollidays value to the Cardinals is much higher than it would be to Boston.

For one, they have a much deeper lineup (assuming Ortiz rebounds to a .850 or so hitter like he was in the second half, theres 5 hitters in their lineup with a .800+ OPS next season((Cameron could make 6)), compared to just Albert for the Cardinals) so missing out on Holliday isn't a make/break thing like it is for the Cardinals.

So they could see Holliday as a potential bargain in a relatively bare market. Their logic being if nothing works out for the Cardinals they could get a potential middle-of-the-order bat on the cheap. Why wouldn't they at least throw out an offer?

The worst part is it shows that Boston may still be interested in Holliday. Never feel easy with the Red Sox or Yanks laying in the weeds for a guy you want to sign.

Rotoworld:

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports hears that free agent outfielder Matt Holliday has another "legit offer" from an East Coast team that's not the Orioles.

"Matt has multiple offers," said his agent Scott Boras. And why wouldn't he say that as he continues to negotiate with the Cardinals? It's not even known if the Orioles have tendered an official offer to Holliday and the Mets have sat on the fringes of the Holliday discussions as they continue to negotiate with Jason Bay. This is likely a case of posturing by Boras.

Didn't the Cards set some sort of deadline? I'm already sick of this.
