another thread reminded me of Kelvim Escobar

sign him for closer and Smoltz for starter and I can live with not having Holliday (as long as we made a good offer and Boras [expletive] it up)

I'd be content with DeRosa/Johnson/Byrd, Beltre and Smoltz, too. But we can afford both Holliday and Smoltz...and maybe Derosa/Johnson (for 3B), as well. Especially if Smoltz and DeRosa/Johnson are signed for just 1-2 years.

all I'm saying is if Boras starts yanking on Mo's balls, he needs to march into Boras' office and bend a fresh bisquit on his desk and move on

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse hears that the Cardinals aren't inclined to go beyond five or six years and $15 million per season for Matt Holliday.
That would amount to $75 million or $90 million, depending on length of contract, which isn't exactly the type of splash Scott Boras wanted for his client. According to Price, the Cardinals would just rather use the money they would have allotted for Holliday to address multiple positions. With the dominoes falling throughout the offseason landscape, there's too much at stake for both sides to suggest something won't get done eventually, but the Cardinals clearly aren't comfortable with going eight years, as reported earlier this week.

good to see the Cardinals getting some media leverage in negotiations

That seems like a pretty weak contract offer...which doesn't seem to jive with how the rest of the teams are reacting to Holliday.

If I'm the Mets, why not take 4 yr/$62 million that I have slotted for Bay, add another year at $15.5 million and call it a day?
If I'm the Red Sox, why not take Bay's money and go after Holliday instead of Lackey?
If I'm the Yankees, why not just buy him out?

Me thinks no one knows what the heck is going on...or everyone is waiting to see what the Yankees are doing before making a bid.

I can't believe there aren't numerous teams that would be willing and able to top that. I take all of these reports with a grain of salt, but to repeat what I said many years ago (in thread years), I'll be very disappointed if Holliday signs a reasonable contract (such as 6/110) and it isn't with us.

I'm not very confident that I'll like whatever Plan B ends up being. Cameron's no longer available, and once Beltre signs elsewhere, I hope we go the trade route.

Edit: What TFG said.

That is absolutely positively bogus. Bay was offered more money than that, and he's considered the lesser of the two.
