Why the Matz hate? He’s a very reasonable four.
He was pretty bad for a lot of this season, though.
Also recently injured. My somewhat hot take is that unfortunately I think he's the best starter in the organization right now and it's not all that close.

Lots of work to do.
I think Mikolas is better, but it’s close.
This is fair, but Mikolas is turning 35 in a couple of weeks and has a 4.70 xFIP.

I guess Matz has really been pitching that well the past two months-he’s now at a 3.86 FIP.

I think Matz when healthy is better than Mikolas, but the issue he’s been plagued with injuries his entire career.

Matz has been terrible most of this season and can’t be trusted.

If he pitches well, it’s a pleasant surprise.

We just traded a bunch of guys for players who actually exist. The other teams genuinely wanted our players.

It’s not a [expletive] tear down roster, it’s a flawed team that got snakebit.

Agreed. The lineup is still good. Streaky but good. Defense should be better than it has been this year.

2023 is a lost cause. We were able to actually recoup some value out of our FA-to-be pitchers who likely weren’t returning for 2024+ anyway. And they can even come backb if we want.

The Cardinals are much better positioned to quickly return to championship contention than the Blues are, so they at least have that going for them. But some changes have got to be made within our coaching/development ranks.

Matz has a better ERA than Flaherty, Mikolas, and the others not named Montgomery.

Matz has a better FIP than Flaherty, Mikolas, and the others not named Montgomery.

Matz is on pace for a two WAR season, even with an injury. Two WAR is considered an average starter (#3/4 starter).

Tough crowd if this is considered terrible for most of the season. He’s just fine as a #4 starter.

He’s had a good July. He was horrendous in April and May, and a big reason we got off to a bad start. He pitched out of the bullpen in June cause he was so bad early on.

Yes, if we get the July matz, he will be great as a 4 starter. If we don’t, Mo gets fired.

I mean the issue with picking up a starter is that the best trade partners for us would be (and were) teams in contention who need help. How would you pry a ready to go starter out of those teams? Texas has how many now?

I guess the alternative is other teams like us, but those teams would try to deal from their pitching strengths with the same clubs in contention. Offseason seems much better for dealing with that problem.

Matz was a fine deal. That we haven’t signed or developed anyone better than Matz in a long while is what should get Mo fired (but won’t).

(@ghostrunner)Exactly. Teams in contention were definitely not going to trade us starter caliber pitchers at the deadline. In hindsight, this deadline was about acquiring as much talent as possible. Now Mo can use that surplus to trade for a number two or three level starter and only have to spend on one big time free agent, hopefully.
